RALEIGH, N.C. — BBB warns consumers to be cautious when finding ways to support the victims of the recent shooting at Fort Hood.
“We are fortunate to have five local military bases in Eastern North Carolina that provide wonderful support for our national military,” said Beverly Baskin, President & CEO of BBB serving Eastern North Carolina. “While we encourage support of families at Fort Hood, we want consumers to beware of where they are sending money, to ensure that their donations are truly helping those who need our support.”
Initially, supporters were encouraged to donate blood to help victims. As options for monetary donations in support of victims and their families become available, it is important to understand exactly where they are going and how those funds will be used.
BBB reminds consumers that while there are many opportunities to provide support, there may be misleading or malicious solicitors seeking to take advantage of national headlines and generous individuals. In addition, as the holiday season of giving quickly approaches, BBB suggests that all consumers remember to follow the same tips for wise giving to local charities that they would to the national charities supporting Fort Hood.
BBB offers the following tips for consumers when determining which charity to support:
