Protect Your Identity at BBB’s “Secure Your ID” Day
April 09, 2014

Pittsburgh, PA - Your Better Business Bureau (BBB) and its partners, the Pleasant Hills Borough, Business Records Management and First Commonwealth Bank, invite Allegheny County residents and surrounding communities to BBB’s “Secure Your ID” Day. This free paper shredding event is being held onSaturday, April 26, 2014 at the parking lot of the Pleasant Hills Municipal Building (410 E. Bruceton Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236) from 10 AM – 2 PM.

Residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the April 26 event and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of sensitive documents. BBB staff will be on-site to guide cars through a moving line, offload disposable items and shred them on the spot. Free goodie bags containing educational advice and tips for identity theft protection will also be distributed to attendees.

“Over half of identity theft victims can trace the theft to something that was stolen from their possession. The first rule of identity protection is if you don’t need something, dispose of it in a responsible manner,” says Warren King, President of the Better Business Bureau of Western PA. “Your Better Business Bureau is here to help and by continuing to collaborate with community-based BBBs across North America, we hope to prevent even more theft at our upcoming shred day.”

Last year alone, more than 13.1 million Americans were victims of identity fraud. According to Javelin Strategy and Research, this number was the second highest level on record and a significant increase from 12.6 million victims in 2012.

Bring up to three boxes or bags of documents to be shredded and take home tips and resources to help protect yourself. Documents to be shredded should be removed from binders. For more information about this free event, visit bbb.org or call 877.267.5222.
