POSITION STATEMENT:

  1. On a separate piece of paper briefly describe your organization’s position regarding integrity and ethics.
  2. If your company has adopted a formal code of ethics, ethics policy, or other document related to ethical standards, please attach a copy in addition to your statement.
ETHICAL MANAGEMENT PRACTICES:  On a separate piece of paper, describe two ways in which ethical practices are made part of the day-to-day operations of your organization through specific policies or training for employees, volunteers, and/or board members.

For supporting documentation you may supply sections of employee handbooks or training programs, but please note that judges are not required to review supporting documentation.

DECISION MAKING:  On a separate piece of paper for each category below (1 – 3), describe two situations in which your company demonstrated ethical decision-making. For each situation, include the dilemma or problem faced by your organization, possible choices you had for resolving the issue, the pros and cons of each option, any resources that were consulted, and the final outcome.

MARKETING AND SOLICITATIONS: The BBB Membership Standards call for solicitations and informational materials that are “accurate, truthful and not misleading.”

  1. Attach two samples of solicitations or informational materials (e.g., brochures, advertising, websites, radio/TV ads) that you feel exemplify ethical communications.
  2. With particular attention to ethical considerations, on a separate piece of paper describe the process of developing these materials, including the selection of the message and design, substantiation of any claims, and any special concerns (i.e., controversial subjects, use of client images/testimonies, privacy issues).
Please note that judges are not required to review non-print media. For radio/TV, enclose both the original spot as aired and written transcripts. For websites, include both the URL address for the site and hard copies of the appropriate pages.

RECOGNITION/AWARDS:  On a separate piece of paper, provide examples of recognition or acknowledgement from your peers, civic organizations and the communities you serve. These may include national or local awards, news coverage, public honors, etc. (Please limit to one page.)

HISTORY/REPUTATION:  On a separate piece of paper, provide a brief description (one page or less) of your organization’s history of ethical practices and accountability. This is the appropriate place to discuss the impetus behind your organization’s creation, the intentions of the founders, how later leaders have maintained the original vision (or changed course to address new social conditions), any steps taken to ensure public accountability, etc.

RETURN TO THE COMMUNITY: On a separate piece of paper, please describe two programs, policies, collaborations, or other actions taken by your organization that have returned value to your community beyond the scope of your mission.
