Complaint: My daughter contracted with South Hills Movers in June 2013. After she made payment she requested a date for the move. It took two months for the company to determine a date for the move.On the move date, I was present. The movers brought the wrong size truck - which should have been determined at the time of the estimate. The movers then brought such a small truck that the contents of the home could not fit in the truck. This necessitated taking the truck back to the movers' location to unload and come back with the truck. The movers were asked to pack heirloom ******** ******* china. They packed the china in a damp box and placed a DVD player on top of the china.My daughter spent 2 weeks in a hotel in Chicago because the movers could not give her a move-in date. She had specifically told the movers that the condo board had to approve a move-in date but the "move planner" would not give her an answer. It was not until I called the general manager personally that he noted he would call back with a move-in date - which he did three days later with very little time to obtain the condo board approval. My calls to the "move planner" were ignored - and she did not call me back.I was present for the move-in. The movers came in a UHaul truck which meant that my daughter's belongings had been repacked yet again. The condo board required that the back staircase be used for the move. The movers did not use the back staircase. The movers had been told that they had to be done with the move by 12:00 p.m. It was only through my intervention that the movers started at 7:30 a.m. instead of 9:30 p.m. The movers were slow and disappeared for large periods of time with no explanation.Damages to my daughter's property include:* Scratching and splintering on the back of piano* Many broken pieces of heirloom ******** ******* china* Damage to the china closet caused by unsafe moving techniques - now the top drawer will not close* Broken foot and splintering on chest
Desired Settlement: My daughter would like to be reimbursed for half the cost of the move - $2500.00. She would also like to be reimbursed for the broken ******** ******* China pieces and broken lamp.
Dear BBB of Western PA,
South Hills Movers does not agree with most of the representations made by this customer in the written complaint to the BBB. If the BBB requires it, we can and will respond to each complaint item individually. At this point, South Hills Movers believes that it met its stated obligations to this customer.
We regret that there were alleged damages to certain articles that we moved for the customer. Our process requires that a written statement of loss or damage be completed by the customer and forwarded to South Hills Movers for review and, if warranted, reimbursement. We forwarded to the customer a claim filing package on (date). As of today, have not received the completed claim paperwork from the customer. South Hills Movers is not able to complete its claim settlement process until we receive the completed claim statement from the customer.
With the exception of the alleged damage, we know of no actions made or omitted by South Hills Movers that would have resulted in any financial loss to the customer.
Please advise if a more detailed rebuttal to the complaint points will be required.
