My husband and I purchased a funeral plan from this business. In order to make monthly payments for the burial plot we paid half up front with the balance paid monthly for 2 years at no interest. We were close to the end of the 2nd year so called to check the balance due. Our records indicated a little over $330 was remaining. The amount we were told on their books was over $500. They offered to mail us a copy of the account. We were appalled to see EVERY payment made had a $20 late fee attached! The only payment that was close to being late was the first one because we had not received the payment coupons from them over a month later. I called on the day it was due and made a credit card payment over the phone. We had difficulty finding a billing person to talk with but finally we were able to set up an appointment with someone. The woman started off saying she went over the account and deleted all but 7 of the 19 late fees. According to her if a payment is received on time but not POSTED before the due date their system automatically assigns a late fee. My husband let her know we had bank statements for every month which documents the processing date of all payments were made prior to our due date on the 20th. She apologized and said they would take off the remaining 7 late fees. Once done her balance due matched what we had. We paid the balance so no further issues should arise. However, as someone who has worked in bookkeeping, I have never encountered any system which would do such a poor job. Or I could not imagine my supervisor ever allowing me to be so far behind in closing a previous month. My concern is for senior citizens like us to end up paying late fees without questioning why.
