BBB “Secure Your ID” Day – Nearly ¾ of a Million Pounds of Materials Shredded

September 26, 2008

On Saturday, September 20, Better Business Bureau of Eastern and Northern Ontario and the Outaouais and its partner, Securit/Shred-It, shredded personal and sensitive documents at BBB’s first annual “Secure Your ID” Day at Ottawa Rapidz Baseball Stadium.

The event, which ran from 10 am to 2 pm, featured FREE on-site document shredding. BBB staff provided information and tips to consumers about protecting their identity.

BBB saw consumers and small business owners from 30 states and two provinces deliver more than 710,000 pounds (355 tons) of materials for safe, responsible destruction, making BBB “Secure Your ID” Day the largest single day event of its kind ever held.

“BBB and our partners are providing identity theft prevention solutions for consumers and business owners with easy-to-use services and programs like BBB “Secure Your ID” Day,” said Steve Cole, president and CEO for the Council of Better Business Bureaus. “None of us can afford to take a passive approach to identity theft – the issue requires action. BBB plans to continue helping communities guard against ID theft with more products, services and programs in the future.”
