Lawn renovation service was not performed as per stated objectives. Lawn was roto-tilled and acqua-seeded with no results other than excessive weeds.
Lawn renovation service performed at end of May 2016. Roto-tilling made my lawn surface un-even in many places and damaged parging along side of house. Acqua or water seeding was done following this. I watered the lawn vigorously for a month but no, or very little, RTF grass was visible. No follow-up was done verbally, or in person, and no "Unlimited service calls" as stated in the Certificate of Guarantee" were ever made. The only growth was that of various types of weeds. Germination rate of 90%, as stated in Certificate of Guarantee, was not reached. I dealt with various customer service personnel at Appleseed **********. It was very difficult to get return communication from them after I communicated my concerns about the problem with weed growth instead of grass. Eventually, I did find out from them that a soil analysis was done after the work started (rather than before) indicating that the soil was "dead" and that there was a very thin layer of soil on the lawn. This analysis should of been done prior to commencing the lawn renovation so that I could of avoided a costly expense. They also mentioned to me that a RTF grass expert would examine my lawn to ascertain the cause of germination failure. They never followed-up with me to pass on the result of the expert's evaluation or his/her recommendations. When I asked about repair or compensation for my damaged parging no clear answer was given to me about restitution. Late summer re-seeding was supposed to be done in mid-August but was never done. In late August, I called and asked them to not do any re-seeding since, at this point, I had lost confidence in their ability to provide a lawn renovation service. I called the company office and left a voicemail stating that I did not want to do a re-seeding and asked for full refund of the first two installment payments. I also sent an email to ************** indicating what I mentioned in the voicemail message. He returned my call and said he would call me the following week (after Labour Day) to arrange a site inspection but I never received a call from him. This seems like a problem they want to avoid. At this point, I feel that the only fair outcome is for me to get a full refund since the items on the Certificate of Guarantee were never delivered. In short, I did not receive the service for which I have paid.
I would like to receive a full refund for the services I have paid for. This would be a refund for two installment payments I made of $581.94 and $1,745.82 - a total of $2,327.76
As per the communication below, we admitted an issue with some of our spring seedings and were clear about the options to rectify this and Mr. ******* chose one of the options. Since mid August was still extremely and unseasonably hot, we chose not to do the reseedings until the temperatures cooled and Mr. ****** was informed of this. He changed his mind unilaterally. A full refund was not one of the options. Perhaps he did not look at the lawns that we gave him as references but they all look very nice and the lawns that we gave the remedial action to in the fall also look very nice. We would be willing to refund him half of what he has paid.
From Mr. ******* July 4th:
Thank you for your reply. I would like to go with the option to do the reseeding in early to mid August at no extra charge.
I noticed that after the roto-tilling work was done last May, there was damage to the parging along the side of the house (see photos attached). There also appears to be some building envelope material and metal brackets exposed in the same area. There is also missing soil along the side of the house (where the parging was removed) which helped with water runoff away from the foundation. Will Appleseed repair this damage?

As per our conversation today, the spring seedings were overly challenged with cooler soil temperatures as confirmed by our seed suppliers. This was a common experience for many of their clients this spring. Some of them worked out well enough and yours is one of the ones that struggled more that we are comfortable with.
We can offer you two options. We can reseed in early to mid-August which is a much safer time to do so. Spring is sometimes a bit of a gamble but we have always had good seedings in the fall (as far as grass is concerned, fall starts in early August). No extra charge.
Or, we can offer you sodding at the additional cost of the sod only. We will not charge any labour and will have to redo much of the prep work as well. For 2240 square feet @ 35 cents/ square foot that would be $784 plus HST for a total of $885.92
For clarification on the biological testing that we have done, yes, you had little or no life in the soil to start with. Our treatments have shown an improvement in that. There are very few lawns that we start with that have any significant life in the soil so yours was not a unique situation. In fact, we have tested the 'topsoil' that is available in the Ottawa region for biological activity and again, there is very little. Our program is uniquely based on stimulating that life to nourish the plants and the increase in organic matter helps with water retention once the lawn system is mature. That may take a year or two of treatments. Of course, this is not very possible if there is a problem with the seed germination but we have offered these alternatives for you to consider.
You can look at the following addresses to judge the effectiveness of our sodding program.
For seedings that we did last August you can look at ****************

Thanks for your business,
Better Business Bureau,
Thank you for letting me know that Appleseed responded.
It would of been good if they could have contacted me in mid-August, to notify me of conditions that were too warm for re-seeding, rather than leaving me a voice message at the end of August or early September. By that time, it seemed like they had forgotten about my lawn and the damage done to the wall parging as well as a rough, uneven lawn surface in some locations. Maybe this is why I had a "unilateral" change of mind.
I will accept their offer for a refund equal to half the amount I have paid. This will be a refund of $1,163.88.
Thank you for your work on this file.
