Mission

Special Olympics Oregon's mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.

Programs

Special Olympics Oregon is a year-round program offering training and competition opportunities in 14 different Olympic-style sports to athletes with intellectual disabilities. Throughout the state of Oregon, over 5,000 athletes participate in Special Olympics. Through Special Olympics, people with intellectual disabilities enjoy the opportunity to be treated as people, not just as disabled. In sport, these athletes gain self-confidence, social competency and other enhanced skills, both physical and social.

Each athlete/team is placed in a competitive division based on gender, age and ability matching. The age minimum for participation is 8 years old. There is no age maximum.

There are three sports seasons throughout the year, with statewide competitions and training in winter, summer and fall. Special Olympics athletes train intensely for eight to ten weeks prior to each State Games event. Volunteer coaches are responsible for training the athletes. Volunteers must complete a certification program prior to becoming Special Olympics coaches and must attend training schools before each season.

Special Olympics sports include:
SUMMER:
-Athletics (Track & Field)
-Bocce
-Golf
-Softball

FALL:
-Aquatics
-Bowling
