    I brought my older outboard motor for a checkup after it had been running badly and leaking some gas or oil. The shop I had used previously had closed, and Waypoint was the only option I could find that's a certified Tohatsu dealer. I told the staff at Waypoint that this is an older motor and I don't want to spend a ton of money on it. They said that in order to look at it at all, I had to agree to a 1 hour, $185 diagnostic. This seemed high just to get a look, but having few other options, I did it. I told them I only authorized that diagnostic.I didn't hear from them for several days, and when I contacted them, they told me that they had completed the diagnostic, did a compression check and that they recommended a carb clean. It sounded like they hadn't really found the problem, but I agreed to that service, which they did not give me a cost estimate for. 4 days later, I got another email from them saying that they had "discovered" that the fuel leak was an oil leak, that the lower unit of the motor was stuck and that it would cost $370 more to diagnose (not fix) that problem. I told them to stop working on the motor at that point. They then told me that I owe them $504 for the diagnostic and carb clean. I'm super frustrated that they did not properly diagnose the motor for the $185 I spent. I asked them to let me know what they actually did for that hour, other than the compression check and they did not respond, just saying that the $504 **** stands. Now I have a non-working motor that still leaks, and I have to pay them $500 and maybe I can sell the motor for $200 in its current condition. I believe that Waypoint did not fully diagnose the motor as they said they would, and that they recommended work I didn't really need and did not address the problem I came in for. I would not have agreed to the carb clean and other work had I known the full condition, which I believe I should have learned from the diagnostic service.
