Programs

Parents as Teachers (PAT) of Lake County, Inc. is a free, voluntary, early childhood parent education and family support program helping children age 0-5 years make the transition from cradle to classroom and beyond. Adopted from the national model, PAT provides parents with neuroscience-based information on how children grow and develop parents can foster learning and encourage growth in language, intellectual, physical and social-emotional skills.

Incorporated in May 2000, the local non-for-profit PAT program was founded by a partnership with the City of Hammond, Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare Centers, and the school City of Hammond with the goal of serving 100 families in Hammond, IN. The pilot project exceeded expectations and the partners agreed to continue the program into the evaluation and expansion phase. Since then the organization has grown to include a staff of 23 personnel serving 350 families with more than 400 children in 2010 through PAT sites in Crown Point, Hammond, East Chicago, Whiting, Lowell and North Township, and county-wide programming though Early Head Start. Administrative staff also provide development and technical assistance to other independent PAT sites through the NWI Regional Initiative: Enriched PAT.

PAT empowers parents of all socio-economic, cultural or education backgrounds, by sharing research based, stimulating, and creative activities, which will assist their child's development during the preschool years. The Board, Staff and Volunteers together work diligently and passionately toward our vision that: All Northwest Indiana families will nurture their children to learn, grow and develop to reach their maximum potential in life.
