Programs

The YWCA Northeast Indiana, founded in 1894, has adapted its services to meet evolving community needs related to its mission of Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women. The YWCA has served victims of domestic violence since 1976 when they opened the first domestic violence shelter in Indiana. Since then their domestic violence service continuum has grown to also include crisis intervention and community education provided through outreach services, and long-term, non-residential services for survivors of domestic violence through the organization's Steps to Success program.
YWCA has expanded services within its programs over the years as identified needs have arisen. In 2005 they began offering Eyes Wide Open, a series of presentations on relationship violence issues for middle and high school youth. The organization's education staff continued to identify the needs of youth education by adding Cyerbullying and Sexting to the already successful Eyes Wide Open healthy relationship program. In 2007 the organization began providing dedicated, need-specific services to the local Burmese community. English as a second language classes have been provided along with basic computer classes and case management services already offered.
Since 2005, YWCA has also provided monthly Diversity Dialogue sessions that are open to the public at no charge. Socially relevant topics are discussed in a non-judgmental format that allows for openness and sharing among participants, fostering mutual understanding and respect.
