If you receive a telephone appeal from a charity don't hesitate to seek additional facts. Ask the solicitor to mail a copy of the charity's latest annual report and/or financial statement. Even a newly established charity should have basic written materials available such as a brochure describing programs and a budget plan for collected funds.
Don't give out your credit card number over the phone. If you decide to contribute, send a check to the charity, not cash, and make the check out to the full official name of the group.
Don't succumb to pressure to make an immediate gift by overnight express mail or agree to let the charity send a "runner" to collect the donation. A charity that wants your donation today, will welcome it just as much tomorrow. Report harassing calls to to the State Attorney General and the BBB.
State regulations require the solicitor to announce their affiliation with the charity (for example, volunteer or paid professional fund raiser). If they don't tell you, ask.
If it is a professional fund raiser, ask what percentage of donations will go to the charity and how much will be kept by the fund raising firm.
Ask the solicitor how much of the charity's income is spent on its programs as opposed to fund raising and administration.
If you are being solicited to purchase an item to benefit a charity such as a box of candy or tickets to an entertainment event, ask what portion of the purchase the charity will receive.
Ask if donations are tax deductible.
Giving is a very personal decision, do not feel that you have to donate to an organization just because they contacted you. A donation should be based on your desire to support the organization and its activities.
An organization may change its practices at any time without notice. Donors must decide for themselves the significance of any variation from BBB Standards, taking into account the relative importance of the practice in question in the context of the organization's total performance.
