Stated Purpose

The Caring place provides service and shelter for victims and their children. Through education and awareness, we empower all members of our community to live in peace.

This organization has been evaluated according to the 20 BBB Standards for Charity Accountability. Donors must decide for themselves the relative importance of the Standards in question.

The Caring Place (CPI) does not meet the following 2 Standards for Charity Accountability.

17:Include on any charity websites that solicit contributions, the same information that is recommended for annual reports, as well as the mailing address of the charity and electronic access to its most recent IRS Form 990.

The Caring Place, Inc. (CPI) does not meet this standard because its website does not include all of the recommended information for those charity websites that solicit for donations. Specifically, it did not include a financial information. The website also does not include a link to the organization's most recent IRS Form 990.

18:Address privacy concerns of donors by: (a) providing in written appeals, at least annually, a means (e.g., such as a check off box) for both new and continuing donors to inform the charity if they do not want their name and address shared outside the organization, (b) providing a clear, prominent and easily accessible privacy policy on any of its websites that tells visitors (i) what information, if any, is being collected about them by the charity and how this information will be used, (ii) how to contact the charity to review personal information collected and request corrections, (iii) how to inform charity (e.g., a check off box) that the visitor does not wish his/her personal information to be shared outside the organization, and (iv) what security measures the charity has in place to protect personal information.

The charity does not meet provision (b) of this standard because the organization's website does not provide access to a privacy policy that includes the recommended privacy information.

The Caring Place (CPI) meets the remaining 18 Standards for Charity Accountability.


The Caring Place, Inc., (CPI) a Lake Area United way agency, provides services and shelter for victims of violence and their children. Through education and awareness the organization empowers all members of the greater Northwest Indiana community to live in peace.
The Caring Place's services include: legal advocacy, safety planning, safe shelter, services for men, preventing elder abuse, awareness projects and outreach especially needed during tough economic times. Loss of employment, mortgage foreclosures and other financial difficulties facing the community unfortunately creates a fertile environment for domestic violence.
Community education and prevention will be a primary focus in order to move the organization's mission forward. Activities will include needed programs such as, anti-bullying, how to form health relationships and dating violence awareness for schools, employers, and church groups.
Lake Area United Way supports funding for the shelter program. In 2010, The Caring Place was able to provide services for those in need of safe shelter for 79 adults and 66 children, totaling 2781 bed days. The average length of stay was 19 days. Its core mission remains the same to serve victims of violence and their dependent children.
