Programs

Operating as "Black Pine Animal Sanctuary", it exists to provide refuge to captive-raised exotic animals for the rest of their lives, to educate, and to advocate. Over 100 tigers, leopards, monkeys, bears, wolves, reptiles, birds and other non-domestic animals live at the 18-acre sanctuary.

It raises awareness of the under-regulated exotic animal industry, threats dangerous captive exotic animals pose to public safety, and advocating for better treatment of all animals. Nearly 15,000 people visit annually to meet animals and learn about the exotic pet trade, animals in entertainment, and how their personal choices affect animals and public safety. It reaches nearly 25,000 "fans" through social networking, nearly 2,000 subscribers through e-Bulletins, and infinitely more people via other engaging internet content and activities.

Educational programs are unique in this region and are focused on ensuring a "GOOD LIFE" for all captive animals. It welcomes thousands of school-age children on field trips annually and many more with families. It also offers guided sanctuary tours, camps, overnight family outings, and special events.

Over 85 high school and college students have thus far completed our exotic animal care internship program. Interns learn exotic animal husbandry, proper capture/restraint methods, routine veterinary care, and may be counted as among the "next generation" of animal welfare advocates. Former interns now work around the nation in animal shelters, sanctuaries, zoos, and other community service and educational institutions.
