The FTC Fair Credit Reporting Act protects consumers against the circulation of inaccurate and obsolete information. According to the Act:
1. Consumers can request a copy of their credit record at no charge within 30 days of having been denied credit.
2. Consumers can challenge their credit record in writing and ask the credit reporting agency to verify the information with their creditors. By law a credit bureau is allowed to report accurate information for 7 years.
