Oroville, June 21, 2011 – After what public records illustrate as a turbulent year of tax problems and alleged ownership changes, it remains unclear whether an Oroville appliance store has altered the business practices leading to multiple complainants claiming purchased goods were faulty and delivery practices were undependable.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises consumers to be wary when purchasing items from Holbrook’s Furniture & Appliance of Oroville. The business has an “F” rating with the BBB. The grade comes from 13 complaints in the last 36 months, nine of which are unanswered.
Complainants typically claim that purchased appliances were defective. After requesting repairs, the consumers allegedly endured long waits and repairs resulting in more problems.
Other consumers claim the company does not deliver products within the agreed upon time frame, some consumers claiming they waited weeks for delivery.
“We have reached out to Holbrook’s twice in the past six months requesting they respond to their nine unanswered complaints,” said Gary Almond, President of the BBB serving Northeast California. “They have yet to document these complaints as resolved.”
Some consumers state they eventually obtained merchandise or a refund, but remain dissatisfied with the company.
Public records indicate at least three people with the last name of Holbrook registered as doing business as Holbrook’s Furniture in the past five years. A new fictitious business name was filed June 1, 2011 by Tyler Tafoya-Holbrook who also registered with the Department of Consumer Affairs in January 2011.
The BBB offers the following advice for consumers purchasing used appliances:
- Check the company’s history with the BBB before buying at www.necal.bbb.org.
- Read and understand the company’s return policy and product warranty plans before making a purchase.
- Pay with a credit card. Paying with a credit card allows consumers to dispute charges.
