Additional Notes

Complaint: Possibly illegal attainment of email address. Unwanted email contact/spamming. ** sent me a marketing message via my Vermont alma mater's email service, and email service that does not release accounts and probably cannot be obtained through legal means. yet, it also seems that BT is aware of my location through data mining. This is also suspect, since I've been applying to jobs with tutoring services in California. So, the data mining may not be done with products I purchase, but job applications. This is incredibly unethical, (if it is true). Though the message sent to me contained an "opt-out" option, that is no excuse. Not only does it not help--I still have to open the email--but it is the issue of obtaining my email and targeting my person that deeply concerns me.

Desired Settlement: I would like three things from BT. 1) A personal apology for using spam marketing, which costs billions to the U.S. economy, and hundreds of dollars to me personally in lost time and spam-filtering software. 2) Full disclosure on how my email address was was obtained (and proof that it was obtained legally). 3) What criteria was used to select me, including the origin of location data. How did BT know that I lived in California, when they were using my stolen Vermont-base email address?

Business Response: Initial Business Response
Hi *****, So sorry for the messages that have come to you regarding back to school information and how to deal with homework. It was not my intention to send any unwanted emails! I have deleted you from my list so you will no longer receive any information, teaching, or homework tips from my company. Your contact record inadvertently got put into the system with a list of media contacts. I hadn't realized they were put into the system of homework tips when they were imported. The list was obtained a number of years ago and a new assistant was going through lists we had and imported the media list into my contact management system. This list was for the express purpose of sending press releases out when a new book was written. I just realized the mistake on my part and have since corrected it. Additionally, I have removed your contact record from all of my data bases. Again, I apologize profusely. Nothing like this has ever happened before and I am personally doing everything I can in my power to be sure it never happens again. I didn't know you lived in CA -- the information I had (it is now deleted) was that you were the features editor for education of the ********** ****** *********** in VT, which is why you email was on the media list. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to correct this mistake. Sincerely, ****** *****, M. Ed., BCET Bonnie Terry Learning
