Complaint: It took way too long for one part. They charged too much and had my car for two days even though I brought it in first thing in the morning; for one part which should have been completed the same day I brought it in. A $14.95 distributor rotor shouldn't cost over $700 worth of labor to put it in nor should it have taken the better part of a whole day to diagnose. They also wanted to put an additional over $200 worth of ONE oxygen sensor in it for smog check purposes but by that time the bill for the hard-start problem was already so high I couldn't afford it. With that, it may not pass smog and I will have to move back to New Mexico just to register it!
Desired Settlement: The original estimate was around $200 and that would MORE THAN SUFFICE for a distributor rotor which as I recall from my previous car, cost $182 with parts and labor back in 2010.
Business Response: Business' Initial Response Car came in on the 6/6/12 at 8 am and left on 6/7/12 at 1:10pm. Orginal complaints were Check engine light was on and the car cranks but will not start. We had codes 2,3 (distributor signal), 9 (water temp sensor) and 17( oxygen sensor signal). Had to get the car to run first to check the other two fault codes. Found that the ignition distributor assembly that both crank angle sensor signals (G and NE) were reading 5(five) volts - according to the mazda workshop manual the ignition distributor assembly needs to be replaced. These two sensors supply the signal for fuel control (make the fuel injectors work) and spark (making the spark plugs work). We did inspect the ignition distributor rotor other than having carbon on the pivot point there was not a burn spot on the rotor that can cause a no start problem. After replacing the ignition distributor assembly and got the car to run we checked the other two codes. We found that the oxygen sensor was very slow to respond and causing engine code 17. We recommend to have it replaced. Upon further diagnosis, we did not find anything wrong with the temp sensor. The ignition distributor assembly had to be ordered and would not arrive until the next day. We explained everything on the phone and when they came in to pick it up. If there was a problem the customer never call for a further explaintion or there was a dispute of the charges. I would of been happy to go over the entire procedure so the customer could fully understand the problem. I believe that there is a misunderstanding in the part that failed. There is a difference between an ignition distributor assembly and a distributor cap and/or rotor. The cost of an ignition distributor assembly is significantly more that either a cap or rotor.
BBB's Final Determination: Business offered a resolution. Consumer did not pursue further with BBB and the matter was assumed to be resolved
