Industry Tips

MOVING & STORAGE COMPANIES

Here's some helpful tips from your BBB on Moving & Storage Companies:

When it's time to move on it's important to hire a moving company who is experienced and reliable, and will give you good service for a reasonable price. Friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers who have moved recently are good sources of reference. Once you have narrowed your search, check the companies out with BBB.

Ask the companies if they offer extra services, such as packing, unpacking or storage. Also make sure to ask about protection against loss or damage, and for claims disputes, ask if the companies offer arbitration. Next, ask at least three of these companies to come to your home to give you an estimate of how much the move will cost. This service is usually free. Never accept an estimate over the phone, it cannot be valid unless the
mover sees what must be moved. Make sure to get rid of unwanted items, these will simply increase the cost of moving or storing.

Always ask for customer references, and follow up on them. If you are storing property, and it is a local move, visit the storage facility to verify that the company has adequate security and written fire protection and insurance coverage. Make sure that you read and completely understand any contract before you sign it, and make sure that your contract has total cost, moving time and date, and damage claim procedures. When inventory is taken, always accompany the mover. Promptly file all claims for loss or damage in accordance with the company's written procedures.

Permits and licenses are required for both local and long distance moving companies. In Virginia, local moving companies are required to have an "intrastate authority permit" from the Division of Motor Vehicles which identifies that the company has the appropriate cargo and liability insurance for a household goods carrier, if the mover is moving within a 30 mile radius. To check this required permit with DMV call the Motor Carrier Hot-line in Virginia at 1-866-878-2582. In North Carolina, movers moving household goods within the state must have a certificate from the Utilities Commission, call 1-919-733-4036 to check the required certificate. If a mover is moving household goods beyond 30 miles in Virginia, and outside the state they must have a license from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (a division of the Department of Transportation) To check this required federal license, call 1-800-832-5660 or visit www.safersys.org. To check any complaint records for long distance movers call 1-888-DOT-SAFT.
