CARPET AND RUG BUYING
Here's some helpful tips from your BBB on Carpet and Rug Buying:
If you are considering purchasing or replacing carpeting, it's important to consider where the carpet will be placed, because if it is a high traffic area, you will want a construction and fiber that will wear well. Also remember, if you have small children or pets, consider carpeting that is stain resistant, easily cleaned and sturdy. Make sure to make some preliminary measurements before you start shopping. To give you a rough idea of how much carpeting you will need, multiply the width of the room by its length. This will give you total square feet. Divide the total square feet by 9 to get the total square yards.
Always get at least 3 written estimates before you buy and make sure the estimates include exact measurements. Check the companies out with BBB and attempt to get retailer references from your friends and neighbors who have recently purchased carpet.
When you are ready to sign the contract make sure you thoroughly read and understand its contents before you sign. The contract should list exactly what you are buying, including the brand name, name of manufacturer, style, color, and size. In addition, the agreement should include the total square yards, the price per square yard, a full description of the carpet cushion and the total price of the purchase, including installation, and the finance charge, if any. Some carpets may require additional stretching after installation because of humidity or other conditions. Make sure this service is in writing on the contract. If your contract offers a warranty, determine exactly what is covered in writing, and who will cover any problems. If possible, ask for a sample of the carpet you select so you will be sure the carpet you receive is the one that was actually ordered.
