Here's some helpful tips from your BBB on Attorneys:

When you are in need of legal services, the first step is to define the nature of the matter, and then find a lawyer who can best address your needs. While some attorneys are general practitioners, many lawyers concentrate in specific areas, such as taxation, criminal law, labor relations, real estate, family law, and many others. Make sure to ask the attorney about their area of expertise. Many people find a lawyer by asking friends,
co-workers, or neighbors for a recommendation. You can also check with BBB to receive a list of lawyers who are members of BBB. Once you have narrowed your search, contact the Virginia State Bar to check the license of the lawyer. The telephone number is 804-775-0500. It is always a good idea to schedule a meeting with the lawyer you are considering. Some lawyers will offer the first meeting or consultation free of charge if you elect to use their services. Be sure to ask in advance prior to your first meeting. At the initial interview, ask the attorney about their specific education, training, & experience. Also, find out what portion of the lawyer's cases are in the area of law that you need help. Basically, there are four principle methods for compensation of an attorney: a retainer, contingent fee, established fee, and hourly rate. Ask your attorney about their method for payment, and get it in writing. For free or reduced legal services, consult the telephone book under "legal aid" contact the state bar or a state law school. Many law schools offer free or low cost legal services through law students supervised by licensed attorneys. For consumer/business, landlord/tenant, or
employee/employer problems, you may want to seek assistance through mediation or arbitration. These methods for resolving claims can be less expensive and less time consuming than court proceedings.
