Consumers across the nation are reporting a new scam involving calls from a New Canaan, CT telephone number.

Consumers report receiving calls from, in at least one case, a woman identifying herself as “Betty,” offering to “drastically reduce mortgage rates” or "cut credit card debt by at least 50 percent."

Better Business Bureau is in no way involved in these telephone calls.

Caller ID identified the telephone number as (203) 652-4022 and coming from “Debt Free.” While there are a number of listings for Debt Free across the country, BBB has yet to tie any of them to the telephone number provided. BBB staff called the number multiple times only to get a recording that instructs callers to press 1 in order to be removed from the company’s call list.

BBB reminds consumers never to provide personal or financial information to unknown callers. If you receive this or a similar call, get as much information as you can from the caller, don’t divulge any personal information and report it to BBB by calling 212-328-7200 or emailing inquiry@newyork.bbb.org.
