The Better Business Bureau has recently learned of a gas giveaway scam in the New York area. Local consumers are receiving the card below, issued by Rewards Printing of Encino, CA, that states they are eligible for a free $300 gas card.
In order to receive the gas card, consumers are told to send a money order for $29.95 “to cover processing, handling and insurance.” Rewards Printing claims the card can be used at more than 20 gas–station chains, but at least one has confirmed with the BBB that they are not accepting the cards. The website listed on the card, www.gasgiveaway300.com, states consumers will also receive a $1,000 shopping certificate after sending the money order. Consumers should be cautious before wiring cash or sending money orders to any business, especially for a product advertised as free.
Rewards Printing currently has an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau of Colton, CA, the area in which it is headquartered. The mailing and website both include a BBB logo stating that the business is a “proud member of the BBB.” Rewards Printing is not an Accredited Business of the Better Business Bureau.
The BBB urges consumers to be skeptical of unsolicited e-mails or mail claiming free giveaways or prizes. Consumers should carefully read and understand free offers before making any decision. For more information on this and other consumer issues, please visit our website at www.bbb.org.
