On Nov. 8, 2001, Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. entered into a settlement agreement with the state Attorneys General representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. The settement resolves lawsuits regarding allegedly defective tires and alleged misrepresentations by the company during its customer satisfactin tire replacement programs in 2000. Under the settlement, the firm agreed to pay $500,000 to each state and territory involved in the investigation, $5,000,000 for a consumer education campaign, & $10,000,000 to reimburse the states attorneys' fees. Also provided is a review of reimbursement requests for certain customers originally denied. Under the settlement, the company denied wrongdoing.
