    San Francisco and Los Angeles District Attorneys Announce Action Against Handy for Misclassifying Its Workers

    The following describes a pending government action that has been formally brought by a government agency but has not yet been resolved. We are providing a summary of the governments allegations, which have not yet been proven.

    On 3/17/2021, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin and Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón announced a jointly filed a worker protection action against Handy, suing the company for unlawfully misclassifying its workers as independent contractors when, in fact, these workers are employees performing the very cleaning and handyman services that Handy sells its customers. Misclassifying workers as independent contractors instead of employees leaves them without crucial workplace protections such as the right to minimum wage; access to paid sick leave; disability insurance; and unemployment insurance. The lawsuit was filed in San Francisco Superior Court and seeks restitution for Handy workers throughout California; a permanent halt to the ongoing illegal misclassification; and civil penalties.

      I used the Handy app to book a cleaner for my apartment today. I had $30 in credits from the service to be applied to my booking, built up over time for no-shows and other sub-par service they had provided me in the past. They did not apply my $30 in credit to my booking today, and claimed after I reached out to their customer service that it was applied numerous times. Only when I sent them my receipt did they admit they had made a mistake, but they could only apply the $30 to a future booking. Given my bad experience I am going to cancel my ongoing relationship with the company and I am seeking to be reimbursed for my $30 in credit that they did not provide me.

      A complete waste of money. The company and the app. I chose the biweekly service and was able to vet the person I wanted to clean my apartment. I paid extra to clean inside the fridge, which is weird, but ok. The outside and the inside of the fridge were still filthy. The second time this person was supposed to come to my house she got sick. Understandably, she cancelled. The app then did not give me the choice to reschedule, just automatically sent a man to my apartment, even though in my preferences I selected women. This man was new to the app, no photo, no reviews. Handy.com has to do better in terms of their service, absolutely unacceptable. All around trash experience and preferred to eat the $99 cancelation fee instead of deal with this again. I will be going by word of mouth and ******** groups instead of this scam.
