Union Settlement Association
Standards for Charity Accountability
Union Settlement Association meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.
Union Settlement Association is on-the-ground resource for East Harlem residents of all ages, and a passionate advocate for the needs of undeserved communities. Since opening our doors in 1895, we have brought education, wellness and community-building programs to our neighborhood, empowering New Yorkers with opportunities to better their lives. By helping our neighbors realize their goals, we build the vitality and success of East Harlem.
Incorporated: 1902 in NY
As East Harlem's largest social service agency, we serve more than 10,000 predominantly Latino and African-American residents each year with programs including: Early Childhood Education (seven childcare/Head Start centers and Family Childcare Network), Youth Programs (after-school and summer programs, Tech Lab, tutoring, college readiness, programs for young fathers and disconnected youth), Adult Education (Basic Education in Spanish and English, English for Speakers of Other Languages, citizenship, GED preparation), Senior Services (four Senior Centers, Meals on Wheels, Transportation Program), and Mental Health Counseling. We are a large local employer with 400 staff members, many from the community. Our array of programs plays a supportive role in the lives of East Harlem families from each generation to the next. Indeed, Union Settlement prides itself on serving community residents from birth through old age, beginning with daycare, proceeding through after-school programs, youth services and college preparation, and on to adult education classes, attending our cultural events, participating in individual or family counseling, and receiving free tax preparation assistance, all the way through to senior services, including congregate meals and group recreation trips.
