On 9/25/12 BBB reached out to JKM Ribbon and Trim regarding the volume of complaints filed by consumers against their business. Consumers have complained of long shipping delays, problems with obtaining refunds and poor communication from the business. The response received from Carmela A. Fusco, President of JKM Ribbon and Trim included the following:
"JKM Ribbon & Trims has been in business 16 years supplying customers with ribbons, trims and accessories at wholesale prices and offering the widest selection on the web at only a $25 minimum order. We supply any customer who meets our minimum order and our main market is small accounts that cannot purchase at wholesale unless they can afford to purchase large quantities directly from manufacturers.
JKM does not stock product but allows a customer to purchase one or more items from a combination of any one of over 25 different manufacturers from our web site www.jkmribbon.com. There is no minimum order quantity as long as the customer meets our $25 minimum order. We obtain the product for our customers and ship the order when complete. The timeframe for shipment can take weeks to months before an order is complete.
In order to process small orders at wholesale prices, we do not provide the same services as can be found in a retail operation who charges higher pricing. JKM has a very clear sales policy on our web site explaining our services and our capabilities and limitations. We have to assume our customers read our sales policies and support them or they would not order from JKM. Key aspects of our sales policy include: no cancelations of orders after 1 business day; orders on back order remain open until we ship if no date required is specified in the original order; we cannot provide the service of advance notice of back orders; we can only respond to email inquiries after the time we expected to ship the order has passed; and, we only communicate by email due to the volume of customers we service. We would not expect any customer to order from JKM if they cannot support these policies. Without them, we would not be financially able to service the small customer market with wholesale prices, great selection and low minimum order.
JKM ships approx. 85% to 90% of our orders on time which is an excellent shipping rate in this business. However, 10% represents a large number of orders and products due to the extensive number of products (over 100,000) we supply and the over 120,000 customers we have serviced processing over 25,000 transactions annually. This can result in a large number of orders on delay or on back order. Most of our customers understand back orders and delays in our business, however, since the economic downturn we have seen more customers quickly involve the BBB in a delayed order which has resulted in significantly more BBB complaints on file in New Jersey.
Although the complaints represent a very small number of the order transactions (200 over 12 months is less than 1%), we take them seriously and respond to all our customers by email. Every complaint on file with the BBB has received emails from JKM Ribbon & Trims and the complaint is either resolved or in the process of being resolved. However, due to the economy we have reduced our workforce and do not have the resources to respond to the BBB and continue to respond to the volume of emails from our customers. Our first priority has been to respond to our customers directly. While we try to respond by email within 1 to 2 business days, it may take up to 5-6 days to respond due to research on a customer order.
Most complaints involve delivery of products within the timeframe we estimate at the time of the order (which in turn cause cancelations, refunds, store credits, replacements). Due to the economy, we are experiencing more stock outs on products than in previous periods and we are working to resolve this issue by expanding our shipment timeframes and working more closely with our vendors. However, even in a good economy, JKM will experience order delays since we can not ship on time 100% of the time.
JKM Ribbon and Trims has been responding to our customers directly and we will continue to resolve complaints in this manner. Our plan in the next month or so is to respond to the New Jersey Better Business Bureau in a mass update of the complaints on file with that office because we feel it is important to keep the communications open with the BBB even though we are not a member of this organization."
