Industry Tips

Moving

If you are planning a major move this year, the Bureau has some recommendations that will save you some frustration, and possibly money.
1. Start planning your move at lease six to eight weeks before your targeted moving date.
2. Ask friends or neighbors to recommend companies they have been satisfied with in the past.
3. Check out the companies' record with the BBB.
4. Contact each company to ask about its charges and the types of services it offers.
5. Compare movers to determine which one best suits your needs and your budget.
6. Contact the Nebraska/Iowa Public Service Commission to verify the company is licensed.
7. Read over the contract and make sure ALL promised services are spelled out. If the company is moving you on an hourly rate, make sure you understand the dollar to manpower ratio. Does the company have the right to change the number of people moving you? 8. Check out what kind of insurance coverage is needed for the move. When an item is damaged, most companies do not pay full replace/repair costs for the item(s).
9. Make sure you are present during the move.
10. Remember, most companies will offer estimates to help you approximate moving. If this is a household move, make sure the company comes and views your items prior to giving the estimate. Estimates can be binding or non-binding according to your contract.
11. Before packing begins, the mover will make an inventory of your goods to be shipped. Make sure all copies are legible and that all items are numbered, listed and described correctly before you sign.
12. Make sure you understand if you have to pay the company at the end of the move, before the move, or if you will be billed.
