Invoice not itemized & higher than quoted. Also product installed was stamped ***** (** mos ago) but product warranty expires 18 mos after manufacture
I called JH to estimate the cost to repair or replacement my battery-backup sump pump, which was working but the alarm was malfunctioning. (I already took the existing marine battery to the manufacturer, ********** *******, and it checked out fine.)

John Henry doesn't repair the ******** ******** system I had, so the plumber offered to replace it with a ******* system, which they had in stock. The quote for their recommended system (******* ***) was $*** installed.

After conferring with my husband on the estimated cost, I agreed to the $*** replacement. I'd written down $*** at the time I heard (misheard?) the estimate, and that's what my husband recalls discussing too. The plumber and I discussed that quoted price too. He said that the company gets a better deal on the system than I could get myself online. The ******* *** system was listed on ****** and on a few other sites as $***, so with the additional 1.5 hrs labor charge (as technician had estimated), $*** seemed a little high, but not unreasonable.

I had to leave for an errand (1 hr total time) before the technician left, but he said he was nearly done at 1.25 hours. He said he'd return with the bill later. He did, and I was surprised to see his un-itemized bill said $***. I immediately questioned the extra $*** and was told I must have misheard him.

I called John Henry's accounting department today (next day) and was told the $*** was right--that the total labor time was 2.38 hrs (!!!) and that the system cost $*** plus a couple of pvc pieces = $***. This is ~$** higher than the online prices and seems like retroactive calculations. Needless to say, I'm skeptical.

There is another problem besides the $*** I think I was overcharged. My other problem is that the manufacturer's warranty for this system clearly states that the warranty applies "for a period of one year from date of purchase by the end user, or 18 months from date of original manufacture of product, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST." The manufacture date is clearly stamped ***** (***** ****).

End-user purchase and installation was yesterday, **-**-****, which means there is only 3 months left on the product warranty. This is unacceptable. I could have ordered a brand new system from ****** for $** less than John Henry's charged me. I pointed this out and asked JH to email me confirmation that they would replace the backup sump pump system if it broke down within the next year. I provided my email. I have not had a written response from them yet.

I have never before complained to the BBB about any product or service, but I feel I have been cheated by John Henry Plumbing and I want to make a formal complaint in order to warn others.

Desired Settlement
I think $*** refund is fair, plus a written confirmation that they will replace and reinstall the ******* *** backup sump pump system without charge if it fails within the next 12 months.

Of course, I'd be more than happy if they would write off the entire bill. However, I don't expect that will happen. More likely, I'll just find a more trustworthy plumber next time.

Business Response /* (***0, 5, 2015/05/27) */
BBB Complaint ******** ****** Case # *********

We are in receipt of the above referenced complaint. The following is our response.

We do not disagree that a person can always find something on the Internet for less money. Our opinion that comparing our prices or any plumbing companies prices to the Internet is not an apple to apples comparison for a number of reasons.

Our technician is adamant that he quoted the $****** and therefor that is what he billed. Obviously there is a misunderstanding between our technician and the customer as indicated in the customer complaint "(misheard?)".

Our technician was dispatched to the customer's residence on ************. The complaint was received by the BBB on ************. The next day, being the reason the customer had not received a written response. "I have not had a written response from them yet".

We have nothing to do with the Manufacturers warranty. Our manager did agree to contact the manufacturer to see if they would extend their coverage under the circumstances. They declined due to the fact that the customer elected to reuse their old battery and not purchase *********.

We received the BBB complaint form on ************, 7 days after we completed the work. Due to the lapse in time before the factory responded to our manager concerning their warranty, our manager had not responded in writing but was intending to before we received this complaint.

John Henry's is confident that both our technician and manager treated the customer fairly and timely. It is unfortunate that on occasion misunderstandings like this can occur, through no fault of either party involved.

In the spirit of cooperation, John Henry's would offer the following resolve. We will be happy to refund the customer $****** in hopes this will satisfy the customers misunderstanding concerning the quoted price. Also, John Henrys will personally accept the responsibility of standing behind the pump and warranty it for 12 months from date of instillation. This warranty will not include any responsibility concerning the customer-supplied battery. The warranty will only cover mechanical failures that are not associated with the outside influences such as the ingestion of gravel etc.

Upon acceptance from the customer and dismissal of this complaint we will send the customer a refund check and written understanding of the warranty.

Consumer Response
(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
Yes, I agree that we can amicably resolve this misunderstanding. I appreciate that you have agreed to the $*** refund and will warranty the sump pump system you installed (minus, of course, the marine battery I purchased separately) for 1 full year. Thank you.

Case # *********: **** ****

**** **** has an ***************** Model ********* system, Serial Number ********. This unit is over 30 years old and no longer exists in ****************** records. Originally these units operated on R12 refrigerant. Over the years R12 was replaced by R22. Currently, R22 is no longer manufactured and is in the process of being phased out and replaced with R410A. Mr. **** unit is so old that parts, if available at all, are on a very limited basis. By the fact that the refrigerant is low and in need of charging indicates that the equipment is in a state of disrepair. John Henry's would be remiss in our duties if we didn't bring these facts to the attention of Mr. ****. Unfortunately, it appears our HVAC technician failed to address this properly and the intended message was lost somewhere in the process. It is the opinion of John Henry's that any money spent on continuing to band aid or repair this unit is basically a waist. It is inevitable that the day is coming when the failure will be beyond repair. Additionally, the cost of R22 is extremely costly and just compounds the effect of any costs incurred to keep the equipment limping along. Additionally, 30+ year old equipment is terribly inefficient compared to today's modern upgrade in technology. Not to mention that a great amount of efficiency is already lost when the R12 refrigerant was evidently changed to R22.

We do however understand this decision belongs to the customer and that we can only advise or suggest what we feel is the reasonable direction under these circumstances. Consequently we agree to refund our normal diagnostics charge in the spirit of cooperation. We wish Mr. **** the best of luck with his equipment. The check is already in the mail.

I had to give John Henry's my *********** **** bank card number but asked to be billed by mail. I was told this was ok no charge would go on my card.
I live in *********. I needed a plumber as prior tenant at my rental let her children flush batteries and toys down the toilet. My son moved into the property the end of ********. I gave the ok for this company to unclog the toilet and check my furnace at ************************. An agreement was made that when I was billed I would use my *********** bill pay and no charges should go on my ** **** card. During this call I gave the secretary my mailing address in ********* (TWICE). I received a call from their office that they kept getting returned bills in the mail. The gal on the phone said they were mailing it to ********* Street in ********** instead of *********. She said they would mail it to my correct address at **** ********* ** *********. I received a bill that was post marked *****************. I did not get the bill in the mail within a normal time. I am guessing due to increased mail ************. On ******** John Henry's charged my **** at *********** without my knowledge or permission. I think they mislead me as they charged my card when they said they would not. I make very good money at my job.
We have had sub-zero temps in *************** for the past month off and on. I planned on paying the bill IN FULL when I get paid on *********.
To my surprise when I went to the grocery store my card was denied today. I had no knowledge until today when I reviewed my online *********** checking statement that I was charged by John Henry's. I make about ****** per year and have been trying to keep my credit in good standing.
This has affected me financially in a negative way. I couldn't buy groceries. I park on the street and Monday we are supposed to have 50 below zero temps and I cannot fill my car with gas. I take care of ************************ while he is at work.....sure hope I can get to work Monday. I have a credit card payment due this next week and don't get paid for another whole week. This will have a negative impact on my credit score. My heat is oil heat. They provider will not deliver oil for heating to my home unless I can pay for a minimum of *********** of oil. That is about $*** per shot. How expensive is it going to be if my water pipes freeze and break because I can't buy heating fuel because John Henry's made an unauthorized debit to my *********** **** the day before *************. Just sick, hungry, stuck at home. Waiting for my car gas to freeze and my heating oil to run out. I thought I would be okay to pay the bill by the 13th considering they didn't even mail the bill to me until 3 weeks after services were rendered. In ********* any service person who works on your home or property can put a lean on your home if you don't pay them. I really don't know what to say except I feel like John Henry's **********.
I hope this goes on their BBB rating because they sure didn't think twice before ***************.
***** ** *******

Desired Settlement
I would like the full amount put back on my card as it was an unauthorized deduction from my bank card.
I would like cash to be taken to my bank and deposited Monday ******** so funds are available immediately. I would like a written apology from the owner of John Henry's Plumbing.
