Technician used fear tactics to oversell "required" services.
We just purchased our home in June. Home is brick and was built in 2006 by an experienced contractor as his own, personal home.
Inspection was clean, and suggested a chimney sweep before winter. We called Chim Chimney. ***** ****** visited the home on 10-2-13. He cleaned the chimney and conducted an inspection which my wife and I requested. He indicated the chimney was poorly constructed and in need of significant repair. His counsel and note on the invoice for the visit was "do not burn until repaired!! :(" He checked the boxes "defective and not acceptable to burn". He proceeded to walk through all services, brochures and products sold by his company - recommending over $9000 in repairs with comments that our fire place was not safe and a fire hazard. Suggested repairs included: replace chimney crown, install terrra cotta flue ties, tuck point exterior of chimney, waterproof, reline, remove terra cora flue tiles, resurface chimney flue joints, parge throat of chimney, removal of damper, new damper, scaffolding, and level 3 cresote removal.
Our home is well constructed, brick, with incredible attention to detail. The recommended repairs were so absurd we were compelled to bring in a second chimney sweep for a second opinion.
We brought in **** *** from *********** in ******* *** My wife (not a senior citizen, yet) was with me for this visit. **** was very impressed with the construction of the home. He even indicated that the chimney was quite clean, but had obviously been used a lot in the past (at least Chim Chimney actually cleaned it) but only had level one cresote levels. He described the the residue as normal accumulation for a 6 year old chimney. He actually commented several times that it was the best build chimney he'd seen in over 4 years. He recommended a few minor maintenance items, a few for "sales" purposes...but no more than about $600 in total repairs. His recommendations included a new damper at some point, waterproofing to extend life, and a minor lintle seam repair (which he showed us). He left again - complimenting the construction of the home and the chimney.
We are so offended by the business practice demonstrated by Chim Chimney that we are attempting to protect the financial security of others.
