Complaint: Issues with Jeep Cherokee after tune up performed at ****** Bros.
My son's 1999 Jeep Cherokee was taken to ****** Brothers for a rattling noise and an occasional stall. We were told the vehicle needed a tune up. Tune up was performed. We received a call from ****** Bros. later that day saying the tune up did not repair the issue and the jeep had a broken flex plate that they would repair the following day for $500. We did not agree to this repair. We paid $235 for tune up and drove vehicle home.

The following morning we took the vehicle to another repair shop. We were told the flex plate was not broken but the vehicle had no water in it, was very hot and had damage as a result. They said it would need a replaced head gasket at a minimum. Upon further investigation, the vehicle had a twisted head cover and bad bearings.
We did NOT experience these issues prior to taking the vehicle to ****** Brothers. The vehicle had some rattling and occasional stalls, but nothing that was urgent. We only decided to take the vehicle in because our son used the vehicle to drive back and forth to school and we were trying to provide him a sound vehicle.

We checked the fluids the morning the vehicle was taken to ****** Bros. The oil was a little over and the water in the radiator was a little low. It had fluids in it.

In summary, we took the vehicle to ****** to check on the rattling noise and an occasional stall. ****** checked the vehicle and said it needed a tune up. They then called back and said that did not correct the issue and wanted $500 more to fix flex plate that we later learned was not broken. Now we've learned that NONE of these items were causing the issue. We've spent $235 at ******, and $300 for another mechanic to discover the problem. Over $500 later, we do not have a vehicle and we're looking at approx. $2,500 to put a used engine in it.

My husband has attempted to resolve with ****** Bros but was told the jeep sounded fine when it left their shop. I don't understand this because they said it needed a new flex plate and recognized it still had issues when it left their shop.

Business' Initial Response
On mar 27,2013 Mr ****** son's jeep was brought to our shop for a running problem. We removed the spark plugs & found they had a lot of wear. Mr ****** & his son came by about this time. We showed Mr ****** the sparkplugs & told him the jeep needed a tune-up. He told us at this time to go ahead with the tune-up. We tune-up the jeep & drove it. The jeep would run fine then would stall. We got the jeep back to the shop & found it had a ignition timing problem & a rattle at the flex plate area. We decided the flex plate was broken causing a ignition timing problem. Mr ****** came back & we told him what we had found & gave a estimate of 500.00 dollars to repair. He called his wife & decided to take the jeep home & would probably bring it back the following week. Mr ****** came back by the shop the next week & said he took the jeep to another shop & found it overheating & had a blown headgasket. He said we made a bad diagnois on the jeep & wanted us to know. A few days later he called me & said they also found a spun rod beariing. When the Jeep was at our shop the jeep was not overheating & no signs of a blown head gasket or any noise of a spun rod bearing.If this was the case the jeep would run bad all the time which was not the case. We only charged mr ****** $235.34 for the tune-up nothing for check out. If he will bring the jeep to our shop we will check the other problems he has now out for free of charge. ****** ******REDACT33 201333 201333REDACT

This is not an acceptable resolution. My husband contacted ****** Bros twice to try to resolve the issue before I filed this complaint through the BBB. Unfortunately there was no cooperation then and there continues to be no cooperation now.

I will continue to be in disbelief that a company we trusted to repair our vehicle told us it simply needed a tune up. Then they contacted us to repair another problem that did not exist. Now we're left with a vehicle that won't even start. ******'s only offer of resolution is for us to have the vehicle towed there so they can "check out for free". Seriously? No Thanks. We've had multiple offers to "check out for free".
