Cribs for Kids
In partnership with Cribs for Kids of PA, pack-n-play cribs are distributed to families who are in desperate need of a crib. These cribs are distributed out only by the use of a strict referral protocol. In 2011, 367 cribs were distributed to Mississippi families who do not have the means to provide a seperate sleep environment for their infant.
"Don't Puff That Stuff" Program
With a grant from the Mississippi State Department of Health Office of Tobacco Control, the MS SIDS Alliance continues to deliver a no smoking message to any caregiver, parent, grandparent, friend or family member involved in an infant's life. The importance of pre-natal care, not smoking during preganancy or after the birth of an infant, and no smoking at all around an infant is emphasized. Participants are given information on how to quit smoking, along iwth the Back to Sleep: Safe Sleep message for their infants.
Peer Contact Volunteer Program
The Mississippi SIDS Alliance is establishing a Peer Contact Program in order to foster a crucial connection between family members who have suffered the death of an infant from SIDS. Fellow SIDS family members who have reconciled their own grief are capable of helping newly-bereaved families in ways that may be beyond the experience of relatives, friends, and professionals. Peer contacts will share themselves and their experiences with grieving families through telephone calls, home visits, and written communication. Peer contacts must be a minimum of 18 months past the death of their child. Each peer contact will attend a training session and receive an acceptable evaluation from the Peer Contact Coordinator. If anyone is interested in participating in this program, please call Cathy Files at 601-955-1057 or Leslie Threadgill at 601-573-1458.
MS SIDS Alliance Annual Memorial Service
The Mississippi SIDS Alliance held its First Annual Memorial Service at St. Richard Catholic Church on December 14, 2008. The memorial service was very special for all those who attended. It was great to celebrate our precious babies and how much they meant to us, as well as the happiness they brought and still bring to our lives. All of the Mississippi babies' names were read, and if their family was present, they were invited to come up to the Memory Tree for an ornament to take home with them. There was also a candlelighting and responsive poem reading. At the end of the service, everyone left with a candle to take home to light that night in conjunction with Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting.
