Ready to ROAR Reading Time
This occurs each day in the Between the Lions exhibit in the Literacy gallery at 1pm Tuesday - Friday. Each month they focus on a different children's author and each week they will read a book by that author. They also incorporate books and lessons from the PBS Between the Lions series. The goal is to promote a love of reading and bringing books to life for our young visitors. In addition, they expose our young visitors to many of the classic, great children's literature and children's illustration, adn spark some creativity within the children themselves, while also promoting reading readiness in our younger visitors.
Every Tuesday in the Outside the Lines exhibit there is a fun and interactive activity that is sure to get your creative minds flowing. Everything from creating paintings with stockings and beans to mastering the art of water coloring.
Puppet Play Workshop
On Wednesday at 3:00 is their imaginative Puppet Play Workshop. Children create a different puppet each week and are encouraged to act out their own story at our Reader's Theater Puppet Stage exhibit. This program supports their belief that children learn through play and encourages children to read, write and create!
ABC Come Play With ME
Wednesdays are now great to bring toddlers to the Mississippi Children's Museum for their spealized program ABC Come Play With Me. This program is specifically designed for infants and their parents, grandparents, or caregivers. The program consist of a stretch, a song or finger play (new each month), a story and fun activity (new each week). The focus of the Toddler Times is ABC's, 123's, and animal sounds, the 5 senses. tactile activities, foods, colors, and shapes. This program helps adults learn how to engage their toddlers and show them easy, age appropriate activities they can do with their toddlers at home, in order to prepare them for preschool, while allowing them to have some creative discovery and socialization with other toddlers.
Farm Bureau Spotlight
A weekly program designed to educate visitors on the broad industry of agriculture, the many careers that deal with it, and how important it is in day-to-day ooperations in our lives. Each week we emphasize a different gallery in the museum and highlight another theme in the museum such as letter of the week, or author of the month. Farm Bureau Spotlight happens every Friday at 3:30. Check the calendar for each weeks programs.
Fueled for Adventure
A weekly program that promotes healthy eating habits. Each week we lead a program in our Red Rocket Cafe that begins with learning how to make healthy snacks and ends with eating the yummy results! Occurs on Thursday at 3:30 by the Red Rocket Cafe.
Each Saturday, we have a program that reflects the themes of one of their five galleries; Literacy, Health & Nutrition, Science & Technology, Arts, and Mississippi Heritage. Each week they will have a smaller program or experiment, visiting artist, or performer that follows the themes of their gallery, however they have 1-2 large, multi-disciplinary programs per month that promote calendar year events and cultural festivals that are important to our community.
Summer Camps will occur mainly in the museum Education Center, utilizing the museum for Museum Exploration and pre-paid lunch time only.
The Visiting Artist program directly links children and their self-directed exploration and practice of teh arts with a wide range of arts experiences and artists from the state and beyond. MCM provides opportunities to create and view art and performances, participate in material explorations while investigating a variety of authentic art tools, techniques and processes in a dedicated studio space.
Each artist presents a project in the MCM Inspiration Studio on a Sunday afternoon once a month. Children can watch the artist create and get in on the fun. These 30 minute workshops are first come first serve. Free tickets are distributed on the day of the workshop.
