Catholic Charities, Inc. does not meet the following 5 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Standard 2: Board Size - Soliciting organizations shall have a board of directors with a minimum of five voting members.

Catholic Charities, Inc. does not meet this standard because:

The charity reports it has 3 voting members of the Board of Directors.

Standard 4: Board Compensation - Not more than one or 10% (whichever is greater) directly or indirectly compensated person(s) serving as voting member(s) of the board. Compensated members shall not serve as the board's chair or treasurer.

The Treasurer of the charity's Board of Directors is directly compensated by the charity.

Standard 16: Annual Report - Have an annual report available to all, on request, that includes: (a) the organization's mission statement, (b) a summary of the past year's program service accomplishments, (c) a roster of the officers and members of the board of directors, (d) financial information that includes (i) total income in the past fiscal year, (ii) expenses in the same program, fund raising and administrative categories as in the financial statements, and (iii) ending net assets.

Programs

Catholic Charities offers multiple programs to serve people in the greater Jackson area and throughout the state of Mississippi, regardless of faith, race, gender, or age.  The organization offers Children’s Mental Health Services, recognizing the importance of the family and community, and working to help families resolve crises without disrupting the family unit.  Crisis intervention services, via telephone and a mobile response team, assist in developing a crisis plan and referrals to other children’s mental health or community services.  Hope Haven provides home-based counseling and service coordination to families with children in crisis, as well as a residential therapeutic crisis center for short-term respite.  Therapeutic Foster Care offers intensive in-home intervention, individual and family therapy, case management, advocacy, consultation, and support to seriously emotionally disturbed youth and their biological and foster families.  According to the organization, in 2014, over 1,100 children were service through the Children’s Mental Health Services programs. 

The Domestic Violence Services Center is committed to breaking the cycle of violence in families, and provides temporary emergency and long-term transitional housing for families who have suffered from an abusive relationship.  Therapeutic Day Care provides an atmosphere free of violence for children with therapy, tutoring, field trips, and parental development.  The Court Advocacy Program provides victims access to court services, including a court escort, advocacy, education, and training.  Services are also available via the Legal Assistance Clinic for civil litigation, child custody, restraining orders, and housing and financial claims stemming from domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking. 

Catholic Charities offers the Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program, providing long-term foster care for refugee children from all parts of the world.  The foster families are provided with support for the unique medical, clothing, and educational needs of refugee minors, as well as support in adapting to cultural differences.  The program has two goals: that the refugee minors will continue their development in a positive home environment where they learn to become independent, productive, and caring adults, and that they maintain and share their ethnic heritage from their native land.  According to the organization, in 2014, over 60 children were served through the Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program.

Description:

Description:

Make available to all, on request, complete annual financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. When total annual gross income exceeds $500,000, these statements should be audited in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $500,000, a review by a certified public accountant is sufficient to meet this standard. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $250,000, an internally produced, complete financial statement is sufficient to meet this standard.

Description:

Include in the financial statements a breakdown of expenses (e.g., salaries, travel, postage, etc.) that shows what portion of these expenses was allocated to program, fund raising, and administrative activities. Description:

A charity should also be able to substantiate that the timing and nature of its expenditures are in accordance with what is stated, expressed, or implied in the charity's solicitations.
