BBB and US Federal Credit Union again offer Twin Cities Shred Events
April 07, 2014

Shred Right and MN Department of Commerce also partners

Burnsville, Minnesota – March 31, 2014 – Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) and US Federal Credit Union (USFCU), along with the Minnesota Department of Commerce and Shred Right, will offer five community shred events in the Twin Cities on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to noon to help people secure their identities. These free events, which provide metro residents with the opportunity to securely dispose of sensitive documents and information, are part of a series of Secure Your ID Day events hosted by BBBs across the country each spring and fall.

Event attendees and small business owners are invited to bring up to two boxes of documents or floppy discs for free shredding at the following USFCU Twin Cities locations:

  • Bloomington, 2772 East 82nd St.
  • Burnsville, 1400 Riverwood Drive
  • Fridley, 6303 Old Central Ave N.E.
  • Lakeville, 7644 160th Street
  • Shakopee, 4290 Dean Lakes Blvd.

Better Business Bureau and Minnesota Department of Commerce staff will provide information to event attendees on how to secure personal information and avoid fraud.

“This is always a wonderful event and we’re proud to be a part of it,” said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of BBB of Minnesota and North Dakota. “We hope metro consumers and business owners take advantage of this terrific opportunity.”

Identity theft is once again – for the 14th straight year – the top complaint reported to The Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Last year, 14 percent of the two million complaints they received were related to identity theft, according to their 2013 annual report. The highest reported age group for identity theft is 20-29, comprising 20 percent of those complaints.

The FTC recommends shredding items such as receipts, credit offers, credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks, bank statements, expired charge cards, and similar documents when you do not need them any longer. Shred Event: Secure Your ID Day is a perfect way to reduce the risk of identity theft by securely shredding sensitive data.

Along with two boxes of free document shredding, the first 25 event attendees at each location will receive a Nickelodeon Universe© mystery ride pass and the first 50 vehicle, home equity, or signature loans booked will receive a $75 gas card. There will also be $50 given towards a new member checking account opened with direct deposit (some restrictions apply). Visit usfed.org/shred for complete offer details. There will also be a drawing at each location for a free shredder from BBB.

Shred Event: Secure Your ID Day is open to the community, so bring your friends and neighbors! For more information about the event or to learn more about how to protect your personal identity, please visit usfed.org/shred or bbb.org.
