Complaint: Grab bars were installed in the tub on 07/15/2015. I was walking by the room that shares an adjoining wall with the bathroom to see the nails used by the plumber were too long. They were sticking out of the wall in this room. The plumber came back to use shorter nails but now there are two significant holes in the walls that were suppose to be repaired by a contractor hired by Roger Vadnais Plumbing. The owner of the business agreed to have a contractor come out the Friday before Labor Day(September 4th) to repair the wall. I contacted the owner of the business a few weeks after this phone call to see when the contractor would be coming out to repair the wall. I was informed by the receptionist that their was a death in the family. Then, I was told by the owner that this was the busy time of year for contractors. Therefore, they were not going to take time out of their day to do a small job like the wall repair. It has been over 7 months but Roger Vadnais Plumbing has failed to repair the wall back to its original appearance as promised. It was their technician who failed to do the proper prep work before drilling holes into the walls that causes the damage.

Desired Settlement: I want the holes in the wall repaired by a licensed contractor and the walls professionally painted to restore it to its original condition. It is the fault of the technician for the doing the proper prep work that caused the damage to the wall. Clearly he could have avoided this problem by using a shorter nail to secure the grab bar in the bathroom tub.

We have contacted the drywall contractor and asked that he call ********* to set up the repair. We have never agreed to do any painting nor will we in the future. As far as the accusation that "Our technician didn't do the prep work needed before drilling the hole." We have no equipment that can see in to walls and can only assume that construction was done to close.

Better Business Bureau:

I would like to reject the offer of Mediation for complaint ID ********. I don't feel mediation services should be charged for by the BBB. The plumbing outfit had the holes in the wall filled by a guy named Pat. He reported not needing to sand the areas. I simply just want the wall restored to the state it was before the holes were put in it by the nails. Pat thinks it would just take a pint of paint and a chip of paint to get the correct color.

Additional Notes

Complaint: New hot water heater was installed and it randomly shuts down and the pilot light has to be relit. This is estimated to have happened over 25 times The pilot light goes out mostly in the winter months. It was installed in January of 2012 and the worker returned at least a few times to look into it, but the problem never went away. By summer, it never went out. Now that cooler weather is here again, it has started going out.

Desired Settlement: I would like a fix to be identified and implemented, otherwise, I would like a replacement water heater.

Business Response: Initial Business Response /* (1000, 10, 2014/01/07) */ December 18, XXXXX installed 40 Gal standard vent AO Smith Water Heater for ***** ****** at ************************************ December 19, 2012 Returned and replaced pilot assembly in response to burner not staying lit. No charge for materials to owner. January 22, 2013 returned in response to burner being out. Replaced pilot assembly as precautionary measure, but determined pilot assembly was not defective and chimney venting the issue. Verbally informed owner of venting changes that needed to be made. No Labor or materials charged to owner for this date. Didn't hear from ***** ****** again until BBB notice. New heaters have new safety standards and features that make them more sensitive to shutting down. There are situations where a home owner didn't have problems with an old style heater but does wit a new style. For water heater to operate correctly, homeowner needs to have water heater outside vent 5' above the highest point on roof and have a wind cap installed on the vent. Vent also needs to be a minimum of 10' away from nearest roof peak. A.O Smith warranty representative confirmed venting as an issue on new water heaters and confirmed venting standards for height, cap & distance from peak. If problems continue after home owner has venting corrected, we will be happy to respond to any issues. Sincerely Roger Vadnais Plumbing Final Consumer Response /* (3000, 12, 2014/01/08) */ (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.) I am disappointed in the response from Roger Vadnais Plumbing. First of all, this is a town house and everything is uniform and kept in stellar condition. Moving or modifying a vent or vent cap is not necessary. If Vadnais Plumbing knew there were special instructions for venting, that should have been part of the installation of the water heater, or at least brought up BEFORE they installed it. The venting issue was brought up by the worker after the install and he stated he would look at the vent once the snow cleared from the roof. To my knowledge, he never came back in the summer to look into it. The worker indicated that maybe he should have installed a fan in the metal piping leading to the roof. I feel the venting and capping should be their responsibility, not mine. I have used Roger Vadnais Plumbing over the past 20 plus years for other plumbing issues and was always pleased with their work, but this is the first time I had them install a water heater. This may influence my future relationship with them or my recommending them, which I have done many times.
