The law requires a general contractor's license for any job costing over $25,000. Homeowners should also be aware that one or more permits may be required when having any home improvement, mechanical, plumbing or electrical work done to your home. The BBB cautions homeowners against applying for any permits yourself because if you do, you could be relieving the contractor from any liability or obligation and placing it upon yourself. For further information on permits, contact the Memphis/Shelby County Code Enforcement at 901-379-4300 or your local Building Permit office. Find out what permits are required and make sure they are obtained by the contractor. You may wish to contact the TN Board for Licensing Contractors for additional information at (800)544-7693, (615) 741-8307, or on their website at: www.tn.gov/commerce/boards/contractors
***In Shelby County, all home improvement contractors who do work in excess of $3,000 are required to be licensed by the TN Board for Licensing Contractors. There are no licensing requirements for contractors whose work costs less than $3,000 and jobs can now be performed by anyone regardless of his skills or construction knowledge.

The BBB advises consumers to get at least three bids before hiring and to verify the name, address, phone number and references of the contractor. All oral promises and warranties should be put in writing. Carefully read and understand your contract before signing and retain a copy for yourself. Do not pay the entire cost in advance or in cash.
