Complaint: This company manufacturer's kitchen cabinets that have a known defect -- the bottom shelf/floor's thickness of every cabinet is 3/16" and bows when dishes or pans are stored on it. (The thickness of the bottom shelf/floor is less than the other shelving used in their cabinets.) This situation was identified and acknowledged by Kitchen Compact when I contacted them to find out the thickness of the bottom shelf/floor of their cabinets. To prevent the cabinet's bottom shelf/floor from bowing, I must hire a carpenter to add additional support braises to ensure that my dishes and pans do not fall through.
Desired Settlement: Change their manufacturing procedures so that they add a support every 12" to every cabinet's bottom shelf/floor.
Business Response to a Complaint
Response:Kitchen Kompact Inc. is a member of the Kitchen Cabinet Manufacturers Association and has been since 1955. All our kitchen cabinets adhere to the recommended standards (ANSI/KCMA A161.1-2000). Kitchen Kompact cabinets meet or exceed these standards and are annually certified by the KCMA. In order to receive this certification our bottoms went through and passed the following tests. All bottoms were loaded at 15 pounds per square foot, and loading was maintained for seven days to ensure that there is no excessive deflection and no visible sign of joint separation or failure of any part of the cabinets or the mounting system. Also to test the ability of the bottoms to withstand the dropping of cans and other items, a three pound steel ball is dropped from six inches above the surface. After the test the bottoms must not be damaged and must operate as before the test with no visible sign of joint separation or failure of any part of the cabinet or mounting system. More information on the testing of the ANSI/KCMA A161.1 can be found at www.kcma.org. Kitchen Kompact cabinets also meet HUD's Minimum Property Standards, Housing 4910.1, paragraph 611-1.1 as well as FHA recommended standards. All documentation on testing and weight limits of our bottoms was given to the consumer upon request. Kitchen Kompact stands behind the quality of our products, and will answer to any inquiries from our customers.

Better Business Bureau:
I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID 8804269, and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
You industry standards are inferior and have been acknowledged by your own personnel. The deflection test does not reflect actual customer usage of kitchen cabinets that exceed the 12" x 12" construction. Deflection significantly occurs in your cabinets that are 24" x 24" as well as 12" x 24"+. I have talked to multiple cabinet installers in the New Orleans area and they routinely add supports to any cabinet's bottom shelf with a width >= 24" to ensure they are installing a safe product.
I find it pathetic that your company has two official positions. One where you meet industry standards and one where you acknowledge the industry standard's deficiencies by your internal discussions to change your construction protocols to add additional supports to any cabinet that has a width of 24" or greater. Your company's acknowledgement of the deficiency shows that you know that the industry standard is inadequate and that you strive to produce a superior product. Now you just have to change your company's construction protocols to eradicate the industry standard's shortcomings and lobby the KCMA to update their standards.
