Time for Holiday Layaway - BBB Tips

(Lexington, KY) - Fall is here, a time when some people's thoughts turn to...layaway for holiday gifts! Your Better Business Bureau serving Central & Eastern Kentucky has advice for those shoppers considering this option for gift purchases this holiday season.

"Layaway gives you the option of paying over several weeks or months for items without having to use a credit card," said Heather Clary, BBB Director of Communications. "With many popular retailers offering layaway, it may appeal to you. But make sure you know the specifics so there are no surprises later."

With layaway, you typically put down a deposit, and the store holds the item for you, until you have paid for it in full. Many stores have their layaway policies posted. Also get it in writing. Answers to find out when considering layaway:

  • Does the layaway policy apply to certain items?
  • How much money do you have to put down, and how much time do you have to pay for the items? Are there any service fees?
  • Are there penalties for late payments? Would the item be returned to inventory and you lose the money?
  • Find out the refund/exhange policy. If you decide you don't want the items, can you get any of your money back?
  • Find out if any restocking fees are involved.
  • Keeping good records can help if there is a problem later on.
