Jamaican Phone Scam Using BBB Name to Lure Money from Consumers
July 01, 2013

A classic scam is back in action! Jamaican scammers are calling unsuspecting consumers in West Virginia pretending to be representatives of the BBB.

How the Scam Works

You receive a phone call from an "876" area code. The person on the other end is a foreign sounding individual claiming to be with the BBB in Beaver, West Virginia. The caller tells you that you've won an instant cash reward totaling $250 million dollars.

The caller then tells you in order to claim the prize you need to pay them a fee. You are instructed to put $89.95 on a Green Dot MoneyPak Card from a local Walmart and give the card number to the "BBB representative" before your winnings will be delivered.

One the MoneyPak Card information is given, the "BBB representative" will agree to meet you at the bank of your choice to hand deliver the prize winnings.

Amanda Tietze, Vice President of the West Virginia Division of the BBB states "Consumers should be very cautious of any prize offers that ask you to share your personal information or pay a fee in advance, especially one that is claiming to be the BBB".

Consumers should be aware, there is no BBB office located in Beaver, West Virginia. The local West Virginia office is located in Charleston West Virginia and services the whole states except for the 3 counties located in the Eastern Panhandle. The Eastern Panhandle is serviced by the BBB in Washington, DC.

Tips

  • The BBB will never call claiming you've won a prize
  • Be very cautious of any prize offer that asks you to share personal information or hand over money.
  • Verify the call you are receiving is legitmate. Hang up and call your local BBB office to verify at 1-866-228-1820.
