The Better Business Bureau was founded in 1912, and currently consists of 113 independently incorporated local BBB organizations across Canada and the United States. All BBB organizations are co-ordinated under the Council of Better Business Bureaus (CBBB), whose headquarters is located in Arlington, Virginia.
The BBB collects and provides free business reliability reviews on more than 4 million businessess throughout North America. In 2012, the BBB received over 100 million consumer requests for information and continues to help consumers make informed buying decisions in today's marketplace. In addition, the BBB functions to alert the public to unethical business practices, conducts advertising reviews, and assists in charity donations.
The BBB also serves as an intermediary between businesses and consumers, helping to resolve more than 1 million consumer disputes against businesses each year.
Since the Better Business Bureau is not afilliated with any government agency, BBB Accredited Businesses are expected to pledge and continue to adhere to the BBB Code of Advertising and BBB Code of Business Practices. This is done through industry self-regulation.
Our BBB, with a main office in Kitchener and offices in Toronto, currently services a majority of the Mid-Western and Central Ontario region. In 2005, we began to service the Greater Toronto Area. By 2011, we were offering our services to the consumers and businesses of Hamilton, Halton, Niagara and Brantford areas. The change occurred as part of the integration of BBB operations in Canada and the United States into one North American system.
