Complaint: I hired Top Tax Defenders in September 2012. The basis of my decision to hire them and pay them $7500 upfront was the promises listed on their website and the initial conversations I had with a consultant there that ensured me they would be able to remove my liens and cut my tax bill without any problem. Ater hiring them that was the end of the service. Any contact was almost exclusively initiated by me. Then I began receiving notices from the IRS that they were going to apply liens against me. I emailed Top Tax Defenders the information and they indicated they would take care of it. As time passed they ensured me they were taking care of the liens. In November 2012 the IRS cleaned out by bank accounts. They also placed a lien against my paychecks. When I contacted Top Tax Defenders in somewhat of a panic to get this stopped they simply told me "oh there really is nothing we can do to get the liens removed". I was fairly shocked. I had thought that was what they did. Later they let me know they would be unable to really lower my tax bill either. Total scam of a business only out to get your upfront money. As a further note I would share that when I started contacting the IRS revenue officer myself he indicated that he had only been contacted by Top Tax Defenders once to get the power of attorney filed. After that he had no further contact. That is what my $7500 purchased; nothing.
Desired Settlement: I received a letter in the mail today informing me that Top Tax Defenders had satisfied our contract. Obviously I feel very strongly that this is not the case. I still have liens and I still am being harassed by the IRS. I still don't have a payment plan in place with the IRS which was ultimately why I hired them. To the extent employee hours were presumably spent on my behalf I would request that $2000 of the $7500 be returned giving more than fair compensation for the "services" provided
We have reviewed our records regarding Mr. ******* complaint.
At this time we are unable to determine why Mr. ***** would have filed a complaint with the BBB. We closed our file with Mr. ***** on December 13, 2012 in response to an email from Mr. ***** asking that we do so. I am attaching a copy of the email. Further we completed extensive work on Mr. ******* case including numerous discussions with Mr. ***** and the IRS on his behalf. We will contact Mr. ***** and see if we can resolve this matter and then we will report back to the BBB on the discussion.

The term "extensive" work on my behalf is unbelievable. I completed all of the required paperwork. I am now dealing with the IRS directly. In conversations with the revenue officer he indicated very clearly that he was contacted one time only. Further he indicated that the contact was for the purposes of putting in place the power of attorney I had authorized for your firm. I did ask for the case to be closed out on your end simply due to extreme disgust. I was taking over the case myself. Working with you generated two results. First I lost $7000 during a time I could not afford to lose it. Second I had liens placed on my pay, bank accounts, and personal assets due to NON-CONTACT with the revenue officer. If extensive work was done on my behalf it was certainly not done in conjunction with the IRS revenue officer nor were there ANY measureable results. There are no proposed actions that would resolve my complaint other than a partial refund as initially asked for.
I appreciate your response to the previous message. You mention that you do not believe that we performed extensive work on your behalf. You also stated that we only contacted the Revenue Officer to submit the power of attorney form. If I can have your permission I will attach a copy of the notes from our database outlining our conversations with you and the Revenue Officer for the IRS and the details of the work done by TTD on your behalf. If you agree please let us know and I will respond with the documents.
I believe these notes show that we did perform a substantial amount of work on your behalf and we were willing to continue in our representation until you requested that we stop working on your case. At the time you requested that we stop working, you did not indicate that you were dissatisfied with our work only that you were going to do something different which would negate any efforts we could preform on your behalf.
BBB's Final Determination: Business offered a resolution. Consumer did not pursue further with BBB and the matter was assumed to be resolved
