Additional Complaint Information

According to BBB records, this company solicits consumers through door-to-door sales presentations.  Consumers are often told that proceeds from magazine subscriptions will benefit inner city youth.  Complaints allege the company collects an upfront payment for magazine subscriptions, but fails to fulfill orders within the 90-120 time period stipulated on the sales receipt.  Consumer attempts to contact the company are often unsuccessful.  Most complaints allege the company does not return phone calls or address consumer requests for refunds.  The BBB has determined the business address listed on the sales receipt is not the company's physical location, but rather a mail drop box. The company has not responded to the majority of BBB complaints.

In October 2013, the BBB received a complaint alleging Strictly Business 1 approached  a consumer asking them to purchase magazines for nonprofits in the area which included Hope Ministries in Des Moines IA.  Hope Ministries was contacted by the BBB for clarification. They reported they are not affiliated with Strictly Business 1.

Please understand that this company is not an accredited member or registered with the BBB.  However, the BBB processes complaints for both credited and non accredited businesses. Complaints are reported once they have closed and will remain on the company’s report for 36 months.

Additional Notes

Complaint: I purchased a magazine subscription in August 2013. As of January 2014, I still hadn't had a magazine sent to my home. On my receipt, it states that if I don't receive delivery within 120 days to notify the company and receive a refund. I have been notifying the company since January. I have called 1 or 2 times every week. Each time I call, I receive a different response. They will say that they only do refunds on Mondays. So I call back on a Monday and I hear that now they only do refunds on Tuesdays. So I call back on a Tuesday. The latest reply since March 1st is that "they checked their system and a check will be mailed next Monday." That has been the case for over 6 weeks. My check is in the mail. I believe that this company is a total scam. I just want my refund and I don't want to hear another story about how it is going to get to me next week.

Desired Settlement: I am requesting a full refund in the amount of $123.00 that I paid on August 16, 2013. I want to be free of calling this company on a weekly basis just to get my money back. I would also like this company to be investigated as a scam.

BBB's Final Determination: Business cannot be contacted.

BBB Comments: Company failed to respond to the BBB to resolve or address the complaint issues.

Complaint: On August 2, 2013, I purchased three magazine subscriptions from ****** *******, a door-to-door salesman representing Strickly Business 1, Inc. I paid for the subscriptions with my personal check #***** in the amount of $360.00: 56 issues of "Wine Enthusiast" ($180), 40 issues of "Golf Week" ($100) and 15 issues of "Golf Tips" ($50). There were also 2-$15 processing and handling charges, since the magazines were to be sent to two different addresses. On November 1, 2013, I called and spoke with ********, who said that the check had been cashed and that they were behind in processing the subscriptions; the magazines would not be delivered in the 90-day time frame promised. After 120 days, on February 14 and 15 (2014), I spoke with ****** in Customer Service, who told me that my subscriptions had been processed, that I would begin receiving magazines shortly. On April 15, 2014, I left a message for the general manager; my call was not returned. On 4/22/14, I tried to call and heard an automated message saying that 1-800-643-0655 had been disconnected. It has been over 8 months and still no magazines. On their receipt, it states "If you do not receive delivery within 120 days, please notify Strickly Business 1, Inc. You are entitled to delivery or a refund." I would like a refund, since it has been over 120 days.

Desired Settlement: On the receipt of sale, it states "Please allow 90-120 days for delivery. If you do not receive delivery within 120 days, please notify Strickly Business 1, Inc. You are entitled to delivery or a refund." I would like a refund, since it has been over 120 days.

Complaint: On July 13th 2013 I subscribed to two magazines through Strickly Business. I was told that if I did not receive my magazines within 120 days I was entitled to a refund. I called in November of 2013 and was told to give it another month and if I still have not received my subscriptions to call back. After the first of the year I called again and was told I would get a refund in 30 days. I waited a month and a half and called again, this time I was told by a man named ***** ****** that I needed to fax a copy of my receipt. On April 14th I faxed the copy. I did not hear from anyone so I called today. I was hung up on twice so I called them back from another phone number and finally was able to speak to someone. I asked for a manager and got ***** ******. He said that he did not receive my fax but would refund $63 to me. I asked him how he came up with that amount if he didn't get my fax. I proceeded to tell him that the amount that I should be refunded was actually $113. He the told me to calm down so he can help me. I found this comment funny because I hadn't raised my voice at that point. The way he was speaking to me was very scripted and I found it odd. I asked him how many people worked there and could I speaker to someone else. He told me he was not at liberty to give me that information because I am not an employee. I know that I will never see a refund and that Strickly Business is not a legit business. I can't seem to speak to anyone other than Nigel. I just wonder how many other people are having the same difficulties as I am?

Desired Settlement: I would like a complete refund from this business.

Complaint: On 11/22/12, a door-to-door salesman, mid to high school age, sold us a magazine subscriptions with the pitch that the proceeds benefits inner-city youth.Months later, the magazine ordered has yet to be delivered.Call customer service; it has been delayed and will start soon.Months pass, no magazine.Call customer service; it is not us, it is the magazine company... they will fix it.Months pass, no magazine.Call customer service; demand refund as it has been over the '120 days, you are entitled to a refund' as it is printed on the receipt. Said they'd send it.Months pass, no refund.Call customer service; check on refund. again, they took our info and said they would process and send by next processing period.Months pass, no refund.NOTE: each call to customer service the 'Office Manager' option is selected.Call customer service; talked to 'office manager' and demand they send refund immediately. He agreed that it has been too long and he'd take care of it... said he has been there 7 years, made himself sound important and would get things done. Strange that if he were the OM for 7 years, how come I haven't spoken with him yet !!!No refund.Call customer service 3 weeks ago; they show it to be ready for processing and should go out during next processing this Fri.No refund the following week.Call customer service; talked to a new OM who is on his 2nd day... very busy, will call back.waiting for call back. My bet is that will not happen. It appears to me that their business model is as follows. Get kids to sell magazine subscriptions (which include a $15 processing and handling fee!!!). Put money in the bank. Hire Office Manager (or train/rotate same kid magazine peddlers) to answer phone and tell customers what they want to hear, then do nothing.Strictly Business 1 should be closed down!!!

Complaint: I paid $40 to a salesman in August 2013 for a subscription to Mother Jones magazine. The magazine was never delivered. Two days ago, I notified stricklybusiness1 via email that I had not received the magazine. Tonight, I have had multiple email hacking attempts on the email address that I entered on their website and an additional similar email address. These attempts so far have been unsuccessful. Because I use certain email addresses for specific purposes, it is very likely that these hack attempts are a result of my communication with stricklybusiness1. They do not appear to be a legitimate business and I suggest that this complaint be forwarded to law enforcement.

Desired Settlement: I do not want any further communication with any of my personal information to be forwarded to this operation. They appear to be at best a scam operation and may very well be a criminal enterprise. I suggest you forward this information to the applicable law enforcement agency.

Complaint: On July 11, 2013, I purchased a three year magazine subscription from a young man who was going door-to-door for Strickly Business 1. My receipt said that if I did not receive delivery of the magazine within 120 days, I should call. I called on Nov. 12, 2013 and spoke with ********* She told me it was running late and would be to me by Dec. 1, 2013. On Dec. 2, 2013, I called again and spoke with ********* She said they'd send me a refund when "my name came up". On December 12, 2013, I called again and talked to ***** who told me that I first had to send the pink copy of my receipt to him in order for him to put my request in the refund pile. He said that after he receives that, I need to wait 30-45 days to see my refund. I mailed it to him. On February 5, 2014, I called again. I talked again to ********* She took down my name and address (for the third time) and my receipt number and said she'd call me back with my refund status. I have not heard from her yet. I don't expect to hear from her. They have been stringing me along for seven months. I believe I have sufficient reason now to report this company to the Better Business Bureau and as for their help in getting my refund.

Complaint: I am typically skeptical of door-to-door salesmen, but I took a chance on one of these 'magazine' sellers putting himself through college, and I did receive the product. So when another one came to my door last summer, I purchased another magazine subscription. I wrote a check for $55 dollars on 8/**/13, and he wrote out a receipt for me. Unfortunately, I never received the magazines. When I found the receipt last November, I realized I hadn't received the magazines, so I emailed ******************************** on 11/**/2013, but never heard back.

Desired Settlement: While I realize my chances of being reimbursed are slim to none, I figured I'd try this as these kinds of people need to be put out of business and arrested for fraud. If there's any chance of getting this resolved, I'd actually like the magazine subscription I purchased.Thank you for your time.

The purchase was on 10/**/2012. He was told he would receive the magazine within 2-3 months. When we had not received the magazine, I called and spoke with a manager at the beginning of March and asked for a refund since we never received the magazine. Before I actually got to speak with a manager, we had made nurmerous calls and could not get ahold of anyone. I also left messages and they were finally returned. When the manager called me back, I was told within 4-6 weeks I would have my refund. It is now 5/***2013 and we still have not received the magazine, or the refund. I left a voicemail last week asking for a manager to call me regarding this issue, and no one ever called me back. I then sent in an email complaint last week through the website as well asking to be contacted, and I never was. I am making this complaint today as we want our refund. When we pay for something, we expect to receive it - and the customer service is horrible when trying to inquire or ask for that refund.

Desired Settlement: I would like a refund in the amount of $40.

Complaint: I ordered over $100 of magazine subscriptions from a young woman who came to my door selling them. I never received any of the magazines, so I called the company for a refund. A woman I spoke to said I needed to put the request in writing and send the receipt. I did exactly that and never received the refund. I have called, emailed, and faxed this company trying to get my refund, but it is clear they do not intend to either fill my order or give a refund. This is flat out fraud. When I found out that the total of my order was over $200, I asked that my order be changed if I was going to be paying that kind of money. I called the *******, *****, at Strickly Business 1, Inc. the next day and explained that instead of children's magazines going to homes I didn't know, I wanted to change the order. ***** said that for an extra $30.00, I could change my order. So I ordered 3 - 3 year subscriptions to "****** * ***" magazine. One subscription for myself, one for my ******** and one for my d**************. Complaint: On 10/29/2012, Mr. ****** ***** rang my front doorbell. I answered the door and Mr. ***** proceeded to tell me that he was selling business magazines in order to get ahead, and better, his life. He told me that selling door-to-door magazines was one method of improving his business work ethic. I felt bad for him and decided to help him on his journey be ordering an annual subscription to the magazine "The Economist". Mr. ***** filled out a small receipt and informed me that it was going to be about 90-120 days for the first delivery. He stated the price was 178.00. I told him that was too much, so he lowered the price to 100.00. I still refused, and he lowered the price to 78.00. By this time, my instincts told me that this was not genuine. Despite my gut feeling, I went ahead an wrote a check for 78.00, signed the check and receipt, and we said our goodbyes. At the 92 day mark, I called the number on the receipt (**************) and left a voicemail. No one has responded. I also visited the company website (www.stricklybusiness1.com). It had no contact information only pictures of people in what seems to be a learning environment. It is now 3/9/2013, and I have not received the magazines. I have given up hope and am filing this BBB complaint. Not surprisingly, I found that Strickly Business 1 has 191 complaints on file at the BBB....I should have checked here first.
