Mission Statement: The Hawaii Centers for Independent Living (HCIL) is a non-profit organization operated by and for people with disabilities to ensure their rights to live independently and fully integrated in the community of their choice, outside of institutional care settings.
The mission of HCIL is to offer and promote programs designed to empower people with disabilities to take personal responsibility so they may achieve or continue independent lifestyles within the community.
Stated Purpose: "a) Establish, maintain and operate nonprofit
community service centers relating to and for the purpose of
improving the physical, social and financial conditions of
disabled individuals. b) Gather and disseminate information
respecting independent living for disabled individuals by all
lawful means. c) Collect and disburse monies and/or property to accomplish the forgoing and the general charitable, religious,
educational, scientific and literary purposes. d) Make
available, for disabled persons, vocational rehabilitation
services, counselling services, teaching services, physical
rehabilitation services and/or related equipment and devices,
transportation, recreational activities, and any other service,
facility or device that will assist disabled persons in living
independently and in functioning within the community."
In addition to the aforementioned 20 BBB Standards for Charitable Accountibility, Hawaii's BBB has adopted two additional Standards for Charitable Accountability:
21. Each organization shall disclose the percentage of locally raised donations that remain in Hawaii;
22. Each organization shall comply with Hawaii Revised Statutes Chapter 467B Solicitation of Funds from the Public.
Evaluation Conclusions: This charity meets the first of Hawaii's BBB's two additional Standards for Charitable Accountability. However, this charity has not met the second standard. This charity has not filed the Hawaii Charity Registration with the Hawaii Attorney General, as is required by law of every charitable organization that solicits for donations in Hawaii.
