BBB offers the following tips when investing in solar energy:
Contact your energy company: Conduct an energy audit to determine if solar energy is right for you. Contact your electric company, some companies may conduct free home audits and have energy efficient programs for their customers or referral lists. Usually, if your monthly bill is less than $100, consider other ways to save energy that cost less.
Contact your city: There may be programs available through your city or state. Be sure to ask about the local, state, and federal laws concerning the standards and codes of the solar panels.
Inquire about tax credits: Be sure to confirm the tax credits with the IRS or U.S. Department of Energy. Find out the amount of tax credits you will receive for the amount of energy that is generated. Ask about the length of time you will receive tax credits and if you will be taxed on the credits.
Research solar energy costs: Solar energy requires sun, find out on average how many sunny days your home sees annually. As with every product or service, comparison shop with several businesses to make sure you are getting the best deal.
Scam claims: Be cautious of claims of no out-of-pockets costs, promises full rebates, limited-time only/one-time offer, and vague information about programs or expenses.
Understand your contract: Do not allow the business to pressure you into signing anything without carefully reading and understanding the contract. Be sure to obtain copies of all paperwork signed. Be wary if an installer suggests obtaining credit through a third party lender for the full amount of the system even though they are promising very low or no costs due to rebates. Ask what will happen if the business promises a certain percentage of savings from your utility bill and the amount of savings is not achieved.
