Indiana law allows 10 days from receipt to examine health insurance policies. If you wish to cancel the policy and request a refund, return it to the home office (not the agent) within 10 days.
Many companies selling life insurance also allow consumers 10 days to examine the policy and return it for a full refund of premium. Consumers are advised to request information on this option from their agent.
Insurance agents are required to be licensed in Indiana. Consumers may wish to verify licensing by calling the Insurance commissioner at 1-800-622-4461.
As in all instances involving the purchase of insurance, the Bureau suggests that the policy holder read and understand the policy and have a clear knowledge of the coverage provided as well as the cost involved.
Find out how the insurer's creditworthiness is rated by agencies such as Standard & Poor's, A.M. Best Co., or Moody's Investors Services. You may contact the local library's reference department at (812) 428-8218 and they will be happy to assist you in obtaining this information.
