Consumers and business are warned to be cautious when strangers make contact by "cold" phone calls. Especially if you are told you have won a valuable prize or a choice from among several prizes.
The BBB's experience is that there are a large number of firms offering supposedly valuable gifts. All you have to do is purchase a minimum quantity of advertising specialty items such as: pens, key chains, bumper stickers, etc. or an appliance such a water purifier.
The prizes usually include cars, cash, stereo systems, and tv-vcr combinations. Recipients of these types of solicitations should be warned: THE CALLER ONLY WANTS YOUR CREDIT CARD, OR CHECKING ACCOUNT NUMBER. The caller will offer you practically anything to get it.
But the prizes offered are often either non-existent or their value has been grossly exaggerated. You may NEVER receive the ordered products. Or, these products may be of inferior quality, provided at inflated prices.
Once your credit card or checking account has been charged for these products, it will not be easy to reverse the transaction. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it generally is.
If you wish to purchase advertising specialty products for your company, compare prices for similar merchandise from established store in your area.
