Don’t get “Hosed” by a Landscaper

Edmonton, AB – May 22, 2014: Take a little extra time this season and doyour homework when hiring a landscaper to avoid getting hosed

The first blade of grass pokes through and it’s suddenly BBQ season! Everyone wants their yards in ship shape for the first big soire. Landscapers are suddenly bombarded with calls from excited homeowners looking for immediate help. What to do when supply and demand go head-to-head.

First stop and take some time to look around your yard and decide what you really want to do, what you need to do and what your budget is. Will it require planning or simple pruning and mowing. Once you’ve made a list be ready to ask the right questions. Here are some helpful tips.

When hiring a Landscaper:

  • Search the business on
  • Get multiple quotes through Request-a-Quote on our BBB website.
  • Ask if they have a business license.
  • Request a list of references from previous jobs and see if you can view any.
  • Are they insured and properly bonded?
  • Having a Certified Arborist and Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor as a consultant or on staff may be beneficial, ask if they have one.
  • Get it in writing! Make sure the scope of work and costs are clear.

Things for homeowners to consider:

  • Do you want monthly maintenance for your yard?
  • Are you resodding?
  • Will you require an irrigation system?
  • Do you want a water feature included?
  • Will you want to plant or remove trees, shrubs or perennials?
  • Do you want annuals in your garden plan and can you do this work yourself?
  • What is your budget? Your “must-haves? …and your wants.
  • Last of all be “reasonable.” This is a busy time for this industry and they want to help you. Give them a timeframe that makes sense to complete the work.

Whether you want a regular lawn maintenance program or are planning your new sanctuary, a little pre-planning and careful thought will go a long way in getting you the right landscaper for the job.
