Complaint: After our furnance was installed we were informed that the filters required were not a common size, available only through their company or a company online. No local outlets sold this size. We ordered a box of these very expensive filters from a company who has since merged with another company that no longer sells required filter. We contacted Hurliman Heating and was told that they had recieved complaints similar to ours. They said that a service man would rebuild the box so that an available size filter would fit. We also complained at the time of installation about the filter box being on the basement floor and again we were told that the box would be set higher off the floor. This we were told was to be done at no expense to us. Weeks passed and still no service call ,we called Hurliman again, more time passed, called again several times and finally had a service man come to measure box. He told us he would be back within a week. Several weeks passed and again no service call, again we called Hurliman. This time we were told that we would be charged for changing the filter box and for a service call. I asked to talk to the owner, was told he was not available but would get back to us. Again time passed. I called again, and after several tries, I spoke with **** the owner of Hurliman. He spoke to me in a completely rude manner, said that we wanted something for nothing and was sick and tired of people like us. I tried to explain that we were told that they had gotten similar complaints and that it would be made correct at no cost to us. He said that we were rediculous and said we did not contact them soon enough after the installation, that there would be a charge for new box and a service call. He finished by saying "take it or leave it", laughed arrogantly and hung up. I first complained to the service techs at the time of installation without response. I next began contacting Hurliman when we ran out of the box of filters that I ordered online, when I realized what a mess this was.

Desired Settlement: Replace filter box at no charge, as I was told by Hurliman, and move box off basement floor. Also, an apology for ***** rude behavior and lack of customer service would be nice.

Business Response: The *****s furnace was installed on 10/6/2009. The furnace quote included an upgraded filter rack (4" pleated filter) at no additional cost. This was noted on the proposal signed by the ******. 4 years after the installation (2012) we were contacted by them stating that they wanted to be able to buy their filters at Home Depot and that the Home Depot filters would not fit in the rack we provided. They also wanted the filter rack to be moved off of the basement floor. It was explained to them that we had a few customers in the past that had requested a different filter rack, and that we had done the modifications for free but, that the requests were done in the first year or even 2 years, not 4 years later. It was also pointed out that the location of the filter rack was industry standard.

***** ***** states in her complaint that I spoke to her in a "completely rude manner". I never spoke to *****, it was a male that was on the phone making demands. I take offense at the entire last part of their complaint regarding my statements, attitude and actions. It is a complete fabrication.  We did state our position that 4 years was too long to wait to decide that they didn't like the filter system that they agreed to initially.

However, if the ****** were offended by our conversation, I apologize completely. It is never our intention to be rude.

We offered to fabricate a new filter system for free but there would be a nominal labor charge to install it.
The ****** are demanding that the changes to their system be done for free and we are disputing this.

We are maintaining our position on this. We will provide a new filter rack for free but there will be a nominal fee for the installation.


BBB's Final Determination: Business offered a resolution. Consumer did not pursue further with BBB and the matter was assumed to be resolved
