Industry Tips

The Council of BBBs suggests that consumers considering membership in a buying club first compare the prices and services of the club to local retail stores and other buying services plans. If there is a savings, determine the amount of merchandise you must buy before the savings is equal to the cost of the membership. Memberships may cost $100-$600 or more.

Find out the number of memberships the company has, and how long the company has been in business. Make sure the type of merchandise offered is what you desire and understand the policies of the organization with regard to: how you order merchandise, methods of payment, finance charges, delivery and service charges, refunds and exchanges, substitutions of items ordered, and warranty rights. Take time to thoroughly understand the contract before signing and keep a copy for yourself. Don't rely on oral promises if they're not confirmed in writing.

Check to see if any state laws also apply. Several states including, but not limited to California, Georgia, Iowa, South Dakota, and Wisconsin have laws requiring buying clubs to post bond so members may make claims for reimbursement of losses if a buying club goes out of business or fails to deliver any prepaid merchandise. Some laws also have provisions that allow you to cancel your written agreemnet with the club within three business days of signing it. Prospective members should check with their state attorney general's office and local consumer affairs agency to determine their rights.
